10 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT ALISHA WAINWRIGHT
Actors will work for hours and appear in endless films, but this is only one that will mark their authority in the entertainment industry. Alisha Wainwright has been an actress with many series and movies under her belt, but until she starred in ‘Shadowhunters’ she was hardly known. Most of her personal life remains unknown, but here are some facts to help you know more about the actress.
1. She loves to travel
As a drug addict, Alisha feels that traveling is her solution and she does not seek rehabilitation. As a child, she would have loved to travel but never had the chance, so now that she is working, traveling is her way of venting after long hours of hard work. Her first trip alone was to the Cayman Islands, and it boosted her confidence to be a solo traveler. Alisha prefers to travel alone because she has the freedom to do what she loves, unlike when she is with another person and has to accommodate their needs.
2. She didn’t know ‘Shadowhunters’ was based on a book.
Whenever you are called for an interview, the first thing to do is find out everything you can about the company. This way, you won’t miss your job opportunity in case interviewers ask for something related to their company, like mission and values. Alisha, on the other hand, had no idea that the role she was auditioning for was based entirely on a book. She had to wait to get the role to google the TV show. She learned that it was not only a TV show, but also a large reader base. Alisha, however, was informed that the character she would play was very different from the one in the book. So she read the second book and watched the first season of the series.
3. She prefers a network that portrays inclusiveness
The LGBTQ community, along with minorities, have fought long and hard to be included in TV shows, and ultimately their efforts are paying off. Most streaming channels incorporate diverse and inclusive series to ensure they resonate well with their audience. Alisha loved working with Freeform on ‘Shadowhunters’ because she also felt honored to be a black woman playing a strong werewolf. According to his interview with ShumDario News, Freeform has most of its shows centered around queer relationships. She thinks it’s a channel that’s progressive and proves it by incorporating people of color as well as those of different heritages.
4. Origin of his parents
Alisha is proudly a woman of color and joins the group of successful young actresses like Yara Shahidi and Ashley Murray. Alisha’s mother is from Jamaica while her father is Haitian. Due to the difference in national origin, Alisha spent most of her childhood moving back and forth between the two countries.
5. She was obsessed with Asiyami Gold’s Instagram account
We all have that one person we feel we can identify with on a personal level, no matter how far away they are from us. For Alisha, that person is Asiyami Gold, whom she recently started following on Instagram. A look at Asiyami’s story revealed to Alisha that there is someone out there who likes the same things she does. Alisha and Asiyami have similar travel destinations, but what made Alisha even more obsessed with the account was finding out that Asiyami looks like her.
6. She eliminates everything that depresses her
Inspirational speakers always tell us to master our thoughts. Our minds are our instruments, and everything we repeat over and over shapes our lives. Alisha is careful what she feeds her spirit, and if something dampens her spirit, then she gets rid of it. Social media has mainly been used by people to live a double life; those they publish are hardly those they live. The pressure has left people living beyond their means, but Alisha deletes an account that expects her to fit into a class she doesn’t belong. According to Conde Nast Traveler, it’s about having a healthy social media sphere that makes you feel good about yourself.
7. His quest to find a personal connection
Alisha is the kind of person most people would want as a friend. While most people don’t care much about other people’s likes or dislikes, Alisha is cut from a different cloth. 8. His choice of meals during his travels
Traveling has the advantage of opening you up to a completely different world and to great experiences. Some will even collect souvenirs that will remind them of the places they have visited. Alisha has her own way of enjoying a new place, and that’s by eating the food that’s representative of the country. She therefore goes in search of such meals as soon as she lands in a new place. When Alisha visited Trinidad and Tobago, her first task was to look for a vegetarian chickpea dish. Along with eating the food, Alisha makes sure she uses the same method of eating as the locals. INTERVIEW WITH ALISHA WAINWRIGHT
‘Shadowhunters’ Actress Alisha Wainwright Explains Why You Should Take Some Risks When Traveling
Scroll through actress Alisha Wainwright’s Instagram feed and you’ll notice pretty quickly that she really loves to travel. When she’s not filming on the set of Shadowhunters or alongside Michael B. Jordan in the new Netflix show Raising Dion, the former Smithsonian biologist can be scuba diving in Bali, trekking in Machu Picchu or backpacking through New Zealand – and usually doing it solo. . We caught up with Wainwright, who is currently based in Los Angeles, to find out why she likes to travel alone, how she uses travel to decompress from work, and why she thinks purging your social media is so important.
What’s your biggest priority when you hit the ground running in a new place?
I am always on the lookout for a meal that is truly authentic and representative of my location. I went to Trinidad in March for the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, and the first thing I wanted as soon as we arrived was the double, this vegetarian chickpea dish that almost looks like a wrap. You buy it for pennies and just roll it up and put it in your mouth. This is Trinidad and Tobago par excellence. I also learned pretty early on that I like finding a personal connection. Of course I want to see the Eiffel Tower in Paris, but I would also like someone to take me to the amazing bakery they go to every day so I can try their favorite croissant and find out what it is than to live there.
Is traveling a way for you to disconnect from work?
Absolutely. When I was younger, traveling was a drug. I always needed to go see a new part of the world because I didn’t really travel much growing up. But my time feels more valuable now because I work, so when I travel I want it to be useful. I want to feel like I’m traveling with intention. I recently took a week off and went on a scuba diving trip to Bali on my own – I was super overwhelmed with my work schedule at the time and wanted to decompress a bit. Sometimes you need a trip like this.
What is your earliest travel memory?
My mom is Jamaican and my dad is Haitian, so growing up I spent a lot of my early years moving back and forth between the two countries. I remember Jamaica being full of fresh fruit and family, greenery and positivity. Jamaican cultures always err on the side of that “chill out” vibe. My first significant memories of my trip to Haiti date back to when I was a little older, like five or six years old. It was the first time I saw what impoverishment looked like and how different someone’s life could be from mine – someone who is right outside my door.
The most important trip you have taken?
The first trip I ever took alone was to the Cayman Islands for two weeks. I have always been very open to the idea of traveling alone, and the experience of being a young woman exploring has taught me that I have a good head on my shoulders and that the world is not as scary than maybe my mom thought. . This trip gave me the confidence to then travel and live in Central America for a year. If you are afraid, you are not taking significant risks. I don’t mean you should do risky things, but you have to take risks. I feel incredibly comfortable traveling alone because I know what works for me and what doesn’t – and when I need to ask for help,
Do you prefer solo travel to group travel?
I travel a lot alone because it’s hard to find someone else who has a schedule that matches mine. But I would say my favorite type of travel is a mix of the two: if I travel alone, I always like to be part of a group experience, whether it’s living on a boat so I can scuba dive -marine or sign up for a group hike to Machu Picchu. This way, you meet new people who are probably traveling from all over the world and explore the culture and a place together, but you’re not so connected to these people that you’re bound to spend all your time with them.
Are there any female travelers who inspire you right now?
I just started following Asiyami Gold. When I first saw his story, I was a bit obsessed with it. She travels to all these places I want to go and, above all, she looks like me. Travelers on social media always have a typical look: they’re white, they’re young, they’re thin, and they seem to live these simply extravagant and luxurious lives. It’s hard to find an account by someone who looks like me and does the things I want to do. I think the social media purge is very important so I am trying to delete some of the accounts that are hurting me. You need to create a social media sphere that makes you feel good and makes you feel healthy. And for me, it’s about trying to find other like-minded women.

TODAY, NETFLIX RELEASES ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED SERIES ADAPTED FROM A COMIC BOOK – RAISING DION.
Four years have passed since a short film went viral sending everyone into a frenzy over a young black boy with magical powers and his single mother doing everything in her power to protect him.
Raising Dion, based on the comic book of the same name by writer Dennis Liu and illustrator Jason Piperberg, is a new Netflix series adapted by TV showrunner Carol Barbee. This mythological and magical tale with a black child at its center is refreshing and necessary. Actor Alisha Wainwright is no stranger to the world of science fiction, having spent her time playing Maia Roberts, a werewolf on the Freeform show Shadowhunter. This time, she plays the motherly role of Dion’s mother, Nicole, a single mother who does everything in her power to keep her son safe.
BGN had the opportunity to speak with Wainwright about the role of Nicole, her work with Michael B. Jordan and the kind of impact this series will have on its viewers.
Tell us about Dion’s mother, Nicole. Who is she and will we learn more about her in this series?
She is a former professional dancer who falls in love and has a son. Life is going wonderfully until her husband dies. Not only that, but she’s struggling to make ends meet. Her son struggles to make friends at school and find his place in the world. So when you see Nicole, she’s kind of on the downside of life. She is defeated, deflated. On top of all that, her child has superpowers. It’s not something to immediately celebrate; it’s something she’s afraid of and what it’s like for him to do basic things like go out in public. So she’s scared. The whole series is about her learning to relax and let go and believe that he will have good intentions and be his best self.
When you were offered the role, did you read the comic? And how did you prepare for this role?
I had the chance to read the pilot scripts. And then I read for the role and knew pretty early on that it was going to work. The response from producers and showrunner Carol Barbee made me feel really confident that what I had envisioned for Nicole was what they had planned for her character. Right before this conversation I had with the showrunner, I was talking to a friend about this role that I thought I was going to get. She said, “Oh, yeah, I saw that trailer. It was so cool and it went viral. And I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ I had no idea because I live under a rock. I came home and my eyes were just hungry for more about this character. The concept that Dennis Liu created is very similar to that of the pilot, but it reads differently. So it was great to kind of have the basis of what Carol Barbee took and turned [into] the show. I had the unique privilege of being able to see the series first and then watch the source material.
The scenes between you and Ja’Siah Young were so organic and real. How long did you spend together during filming?
They raised us about a month before filming, because I had to start my dance training. We just needed to acclimate ourselves to some of the basics of filmmaking. We did a lot of improvised scenes. One of the executive producers, Seith Mann, took us to a park, and we improvised these little scenes. For example, he took us to an arcade. I went with Ja’Siah. What he wanted to do was give me only $20 so it would run out real quick. But we were in Atlanta, Georgia, and each game was 75 cents. So we’ve been there for so long, so we might run out of money.
And of course, once that $20 ran out, I was trying to get Ja’Siah to go away. He didn’t. A perfect example of what parenthood is. Once we started filming, I didn’t have any time outside of filming to spend with him because he’s a kid. He only has four hours of shooting per day. And then he has hours for school and games and all that. So you don’t see yourself unless you’re turning. But I’m glad we had that month of preparation because I really feel like he created a foundation.
Do you have a favorite scene between the two of you that resonates with you the most?
There are so many. I don’t remember which episode it is, but one of my favorites is when my character Nicole gets a promotion at her job. So she orders pork chops, she cooks this big meal and she dances in the kitchen. She is so excited. And then Dion comes running in. He can tell that something good is happening because he smells the tasty food and he sees his mother smiling. So we start dancing together in the kitchen. And it’s so sweet. Because he’s so goofy and fun. When you see him smiling and laughing, it’s all very authentic. He’s not a skilled young actor, so when you see him, you see Ja’Siah.

Michael B. Jordan plays the role of your husband in this series, but is also a producer. Did he offer commentary for you as an actor while working together?
No. I think he was, you know, respectful of what I brought to the table. We just collaborated seamlessly. I wanted to keep things as organic as possible, and so did he. Fortunately, we have great chemistry on set. So it was really easy to slip into those characters.
As Hollywood continues to ride the reboot bandwagon, Raising Dion offers a refreshing new story for audiences. Why is this particular story important to tell?
First, you have a little black boy at the center of the story. I know that little black boy craves content that shows a reflection of themselves. I know I was when I was growing up. I’m so proud to add another story to the zeitgeist that people in my community can appreciate and use as a model. You also see a lot of superhero stories from the perspective of the person with the powers. It’s really fun and refreshing to see the story from the perspective of the person who has to take care of that person. It’s difficult. It’s not easy, like in real life, and now you have to deal with a kid who can move things with his mind whenever he feels like it. It’s really scary. I likes that Raising Dion is grounded in the reality of the consequences of that. I hope people will see that this show sets us apart from other [shows] you see in movies and in the genre.
