ALI CAMPBELL UB40

Campbell left ub40 on January 24, 2008, after almost 30 years. Campbell, who was a founding member of UB40, songwriter and lead vocalist who sang on hits such as ‘Red Red Wine’, eventually left the band in 2008. Their last gigs were in February 2008 in Australia, in New Zealand and Uganda. .

A few months later Michael Virtue, the keyboardist, also left UB40, citing the same reasons as Campbell, and joined Campbell’s legal investigation. Virtue then joined Campbell’s new band, The Dep Band. In October 2007, Campbell released a solo album titled Running Free.

It entered the UK charts at number 9 and went gold. It was Campbell’s first top ten entry for a new studio album since UB40’s Labor of Love 3, released 10 years before Running Free. Campbell announced that he had reunited with former UB40 band members Astro and Mickey Virtue to record a new album, Silhouette in August 2014.

He said of his brother Duncan singing: “I sat for five years and watched my brother Duncan murder my songs. We are saving the heritage”. They record as “UB40 with Ali, Astro and Mickey” after a lawsuit prevents them from calling the group UB40. Their first release was The Hits of UB40 Live in 2015. In 2016, their album Unplugged reached number 17 on the UK Albums Chart.

A Real Labor of Love was released in March 2018, an album in the vein of UB40’s Labor of Love series. It reached number two on the UK Albums Chart and entered number one on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.
