Pret-a-Reporter: What is your beauty philosophy?
De Furstenberg: My beauty philosophy is beyond doubt: take care of your skin. By that I mean keeping it cleansed, scrubbed and hydrated, coupled with drinking plenty of water and not smoking – [the] worst thing for skin.
What beauty look are you best known for?
Maybe the look I’m known for is glowing skin.
Your highlighting skills are quite impressive. What are your secrets?
Thank you. I use a combination of Guerlain Terracotta ($55) in Shade #1 with MAC Bronzer ($26) in Shade Golden; I’m not heavy on contouring. I do it lightly enough to give my face light shadows in the right places. Then I highlight my high cheekbones, a light pass down the center of my nose, and dust above my brows with my favorite staple, Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick in Bronze ($46) or my new favorite, Becca in Champagne Pop ($38).
What is your signature scent?

For your summer travel plans, what are your in-flight and travel beauty essentials?
My in-flight travel beauty essentials are Aquaphor ($4) for my lips, a heavy moisturizer – Chantecaille Bio Lifting Cream, $342 or the Mask, $153 – a gentle eye mask and hand cream.
Bright shocks of color are a signature of your work. Have you ever incorporated bright colors into your makeup? If so, how?
I don’t incorporate bright colors into my makeup, but I will occasionally do pops of bright colors on my nails.

Alexandra von Furstenberg saw fashions come and go, center stage in 90s New York as a social catwalk and front row, and on the other side, working alongside her then-mother-in-law Diane von Furstenberg. When she moved to Los Angeles to start a new chapter on the West Coast, she found her niche as a furniture and home accessories designer as many designers begin – by identifying a void in the market, or just because they can’t find exactly what they want so they do it themselves.
“I was at that point in my career when I left fashion and I didn’t know how to come back because I couldn’t really compete in the clothing industry. Lucite has always been a fascination for me because I love the 70s and retro futurism. I felt like it had never been used to its full potential, so that’s where I found that voice,” she said of her modern, hand-cut pieces. hand with clear or opaque colours.
This weekend, von Furstenberg is opening the doors to its new flagship at 300 North Robertson Blvd. in the heart of the West Hollywood Design District. It’s also located in one of the main pedestrianized corners of the mall, just north of stores such as Chanel and Curve and two cafes. “I like that we’re in a corner,” she said of the 1,500 square foot space. When von Furstenberg opened her first store in 2008, on nearby Melrose Avenue, she learned firsthand how retailers had to adapt to weather the recession. (It has since overtaken the Melrose Avenue location, which is also set to be demolished to make way for new development.)
“When you first cast, it’s always great, like ‘Oooh, what’s she doing? But then you have to have the lasting power, and during that time we also had the crash and there was a scary moment for sure. I started with just furniture and in 2009 I was like, ‘Oh my God, what have I done?’ No one is buying for the house and Lucite is very expensive so it was difficult to move the merchandise. ‘
Her husband, Dax Miller, suggested making smaller pieces that people could buy more easily, and the rest is history. A look at her Instagram account shows the different ways someone might want, or even need, a plate or platter of brightly colored sweets, themselves as delectable as candy.
Entirely conceptualized by DAX Design, Miller’s firm, the environment allows pieces to shine in person – or in the case of custom furniture and signature accessories, to absorb and refract light like faceted jewelry. The 14 colors ranging from ultra bright to milky white and black, in clear and opaque variations, play well in the predominantly white space. Her colorful lipstick logo — clearly she learned a few things from DVF — is placed strategically, as are some neon installations, like the one above the sales desk that reads “von fabulous,” a phrase coined by her old hair new -yorker colorist Steven Dillon.
Alongside the opening of the store, von Furstenberg will present five new pieces of furniture and new limited edition accessories such as the Vortex vase and the Asscher box. “Most people can’t buy one. I love that. It means we are doing something right,” she says.
But she always specifies Lucite because people ask for it. “You have to hear what your customer is saying, otherwise they get grumpy. Because everything is available everywhere, the demand for ‘I need, I want’ is stronger today. ‘
She sees another store in the five-year plan, possibly in Miami, where her Made in Los Angeles pieces are selling very well. Years of California living and retail savvy suit him well. She says: ‘Certainly in my 40s, with my mark, I’m much more the woman I was supposed to be today.’
