Spanos was born in Stockton, California, to Greek immigrants Constantino and Evanthia Spanos, he began working at his father’s bakery at the age of eight. His parents separated for a while and reconciled during his adolescence and remained married till his father’s death.
After graduating from college in 1942, he briefly sought pilot training in the Army Air Force. Later, at the University of the Pacific, he excelled in swimming, diving, and golf.
Career
Alexander Spanos started a catering business that grew into a million-dollar enterprise by 1955. Later, he delved into real estate and established the A.G. Spanos Companies, a major player in apartment development.
In 1984, he acquired a 60% stake in the Chargers for $48 million, eventually taking full ownership. His son, Dean, now manages the team. As of August 2022, the Los Angeles Chargers were valued at $3.875 billion.
After a significant heart surgery in 2000, Spanos generously donated $10 million to Sacramento Mercy General Hospital for a modern heart center. He also invested $500,000 in renaming the Fox Theatre in Stockton as the Fox California Bob Hope Theatre.
Spanos contributed $5 million to support George W. Bush’s reelection in 2004, earning him a position on the Kennedy Center board. He received the AHEPA Award and was honored in the California Building Industry Hall of Fame in 2005 for his exceptional community contributions.
