ALEX VAN HALEN CAREER
He had several early bands with Eddie before Van Halen formed. The names of these previous bands include The Broken Combs, The Space Brothers, The Trojan Rubber Company and Mammoth. In 1972, Alex and Eddie Van Halen formed Mammoth with Mark Stone on bass and Eddie on lead vocals. The band hired David Lee Roth’s PA system for their shows. Soon after, Edward grew tired of singing lead vocals and asked Roth to join the band. Later, in 1974, since the Mammoth name was already taken by another band, the name was changed to Van Halen, and Stone was replaced by Michael Anthony. Roth claimed that it was his idea to rename the group Van Halen and that he actually named it after Alex. In addition to his musical duties at that time, Alex is responsible for management tasks, such as booking concerts, etc. for the group. Their 1978 self-titled debut album, Van Halen, was released to great fanfare, influencing many hard rock musicians.
Although the term “brown sound” is usually associated with Eddie’s guitar, it was actually coined by Alex to refer to the sound of his snare drum. The only recording Alex has made outside of Van Halen is the instrumental “Respect the Wind” (for which the Van Halen brothers were nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance), featuring Alex on keyboards with Eddie on guitar. The song was written for the 1996 film Twister and plays during the film’s end credits.

SAMMY HAGAR says DAVID LEE ROTH ‘refuses to acknowledge’ HAGAR-Era VAN HALEN was ‘more successful’
Sammy Hagar says David Lee Roth ‘refuses to acknowledge’ VAN HALEN ‘has been even more successful’ during Sammy’s tenure with the band. Hagar replaced David Lee Roth in VAN HALEN in 1985 and recorded four studio albums with the group – ‘5150’, ‘OU812’, ‘For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge’ and ‘Balance’ – all of which topped the US chart. Roth-led VAN HALEN’s top charting album was #2, and it took until ‘1984’ to achieve that. (2012’s ‘A Different Kind Of Truth’ also went No. 2)
Asked about his so-called “rivalry” with Roth, Hagar told Planet Rock magazine, “It wasn’t even a mistake on my radar.” I don’t respect Dave’s artistry, but I think he’s smart and a great showman and what he did with VAN HALEN at the start was fantastic. VAN HALEN couldn’t have done it without him. “God bless Dave, but he refuses to acknowledge that VAN HALEN with me was even more successful than VAN HALEN with him, and that’s very stupid of him. It would be like if I didn’t recognize what he did for the band before he joined me: that would be stupid, wouldn’t it? Hagar also opened up about the circumstances that led to the end of her first stint with the band.
“We had eight years of [huge success], and then all of a sudden the people in the band started changing…and it wasn’t me and it wasn’t Mike [Anthony, bass],” Hagar said. .
“The ‘Libra’ record was like pulling your teeth, things got very dysfunctional at that point. Drugs, alcohol, insecurity and mismanagement have killed this group. You can read the full, in-depth ‘Confessional’ interview with Hagar in Planet Rock Magazine Issue 15, out now. Hagar told The Pulse Of Radio a while ago that her troubles with Eddie Van Halen started during the sessions for ‘Balance’, Hagar’s final album with the band. ‘Eddie needs someone to make decisions and a leader, you know?’ he said. “He’s not a natural type of leader. And his brother [Alex Van Halen] was always the front boss – or Roth was the front boss – and when Roth left, He and his brother butted heads so badly, when I walked in it was like, ‘Well, what does Sam want to do? you know? So it kind of became like, yeah, I was making all the decisions, so on “Libra,” all of a sudden he didn’t like my decisions and that was really weird. ‘
Hagar blasted his former bandmates in a 2015 interview, saying there was “zero chemistry” between members of the band’s current lineup, including Roth. He said at the time: “They don’t like each other. I mean, it’s obvious. It’s like a backup group with one guy up front. I bet they don’t say five words to each other offstage. Hagar, Anthony, Alex and Eddie Van Halen last teamed up in 2004 for a summer tour of the United States. In exchange for participating in the tour, Anthony would have had to agree to take a pay cut and give up his rights to the band’s name and logo.
