Acting is in his veins, he assures that for him it is a basic matter for his survival. And maybe he also acts a little when he wildly defends his political and social ideas, without biting his tongue. Alberto San Juan has acting talent, although perhaps he needs to get involved in better movies.

Alberto San Juan was born on January 11, 1968 in Madrid. However, he is closely linked to the town of Cañamares, Cuenca, where he has family and spent the summers helping in the bakery and the hostel of some relatives. His father is the famous cartoonist Máximo, who for years occupied the pages of the newspaper El País with his cartoons that have God as the protagonist, work that he now does at Abc. As a boy he studied at the Estilo school, and the actor assures that he was very shy, and had little voice. This did not prevent him from having his first experience as an actor there at the age of 13, since he was involved in a short they made in film class.

The actor completed university studies in Information Sciences, at Madrid’s Complutense University, and also worked as a waiter, but his desire to dedicate himself to acting led him to the prestigious Cristina Rota school , already at the age of 24. From his university stage, in one of his classic provocative statements, he said: there was “a total mortuary environment in terms of ideas. The circulation of thought was in the bar”.

From the beginning, San Juan combines his performances in theater with dedication first on television, then in the cinema. Although he will always affirm his preference for the stage, and in fact he will not be seen in the cinema until he turns 30. For the small screen, under the orders of Daniel Écija , he intervenes in the series Más que amigos (1997) , and previously in Este es mi barrio . The actor is ready for his film debut, and he does so in Juanma Bajo Ulloa ‘s wild comedy Airbag (1997). Other titles would follow without much interest, such as Sobreviviré , Entre las legas and Zapping , all from 1999.

The actor has meant himself politically without holding back: “absolutely from the left”, “a fighter against evil”, his statements have not ceased to be controversial, such as when he said of the former minister of culture with the Popular Party, Pilar del Castillo, ” It is time for him to tell us about him with Monsignor Rouco”, playing with the double meaning of the phrase. On an artistic level, his most corrosive attack against the PP was the play “Alejandro y Ana”, by his group Animalario -in which Ernesto Alterio and Guillermo Toledo are also part- , where he satirized the wedding of the daughter of the former president of the government, José María Aznar.

Despite the above, San Juan is a nonconformist, who does not like the socialists either, he affirms that he always votes for the United Left. Causes like anti-clericalism and pacifism make him happy. And he points out: “There is a screwed up problem of values, and it consists in that they crush us so much with the trap of fear of our neighbor, that he is going to rape us, that he is going to kill us, that in the end it ends up being fine for you to crush him” . Curiously, his philosophy of life leads him to say that there are no good and bad people, but good and bad situations, which, to be honest, is not very well known what he means.

Acting is for San Juan the basic way of expressing himself, and a way of survival. And of course, popularity is given to The Other Side of the Bed (2002), a musical comedy byEmilio Martínez Lázaro, which would have a less successful sequel, Los 2 lados de la cama (2005). As the actor has a funny streak, he will be present in titles such as Soccer Days (2003) and Movie Days (2007), although he has time for more serious work, such as the look at the world of work in Casual Day (2007).

His best work to date is surely the one he performs in Bajo las estrellas , which won him an award at the Malaga Festival and a Goya. His role as unpresentable, likeable, in the Spanish picaresque tradition, hooks the viewer, and is key to the functioning of Félix Viscarret ‘s film . He has also done a notable job in Hours of Light , where he was a prisoner based on an authentic character, and in  La verguamiento , where he is a guy who, together with his wife, adopts a Peruvian girl.
