Albert Pyun
He specialized in very low-budget productions like “Cyborg” and the first version of “Captain America.” Albert Pyun passed away on November 26, 2022, at the age of 69, as announced by his wife, producer Cynthia Curran. Years ago he had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and dementia.
Born in Hawaii on May 19, 1953, Albert Pyun worked as an ad editor before moving into feature films. He was known for his prolific production of his projects, many of them direct-to-video releases.
In 1982, the filmmaker released his first film, Cromwell, King of the Barbarians , starring Lee Horsley , Kathleen Beller , and Simon MacCorkindale . The film, considered a cult film by fans of titles such as The Lord of the Beasts or Conan, the Barbarian , cost just over a million dollars, but raised 39 million, which is quite a feat.
Next, Albert Pyun shot Captain America , the character’s first live action film, with Matt Salinger in the skin of the famous Marvel superhero, and Cyborg , an apocalyptic film with Jean-Claude Van Damme . Several similar cut films followed. “I don’t like the genre, but the movies were cheap and easy to shoot. That way I was able to explore some ideas and stories that occurred to me,” he said in an interview.
He was active until 2018, when he shot Death Heads: Brain Drain . Unfortunately, he had to retire later due to illness.
