BIOGRAPHY OF AL GREEN
Al Green is an American singer, songwriter and record producer. He is known for recording a string of soulful singles in the early 1970s. Some of his songs include ‘Take Me to the River’, ‘Tired of Being Lonely’, ‘I’m Still in Love with You’, ‘Love and happiness’ and his signature song, ‘Let’s stay together’.
Greene was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and has been mentioned on the museum’s website as “one of the most gifted purveyors of soul music.” He has also been called ‘The Last of the Great Soulsingers’.
Green was included in Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, at No. 65, as well as its list of the 100 Greatest Singers, at No. 14.

AL GREEN FAMILY
Albert Green (born Albert Leones Greene) was born on April 13, 1946, in Forrest City, Arkansas, to Cora Lee and Robert G. Greene, Jr., who was a sharecropper. Green played with his brothers when he was 10, in a band called the Greene Brothers
Later in the 1950s, the family decided to move to Grand Rapids, Michigan. It is said that when Albert Green was a teenager, he was kicked out of the family home for listening to Jackie Wilson by his devoutly religious father.
WIFE AL GREEN
On October 18, 1974, shortly after “Al Green Explores Your Mind” was released, Green’s girlfriend, Mary Woodson White, attacked him before killing herself at his Memphis home. Despite the fact that White was an already married woman, she became upset when Green refused to marry her. She unleashed her anger when she doused him with a pot of boiling oatmeal (food made from corn that is ground into a coarse meal and then boiled) causing severe burns to Green’s back, stomach and arms . She then took her .38 handgun and killed herself. During the investigation, police found a note in White’s purse which stated his intentions and reasons.
Al Green then met the love of his heart, Shirley Kyles and the couple were married in 1977 but sadly Shirley filed for divorce in 1978 and 1981. In the latest divorce complaint, Shirley said Green had her subjected to domestic violence throughout their marriage. . Green also accused her of “cruel and inhumane treatment” in a counter complaint. She later testified and said that in 1978, when she was five months pregnant, Green beat her with a boot for refusing to have sex. The assault resulted in head injuries, which required stitches. After the incident, she filed for divorce, but they reconciled. There, Green denied beating his wife, but under oath, in 1982, he admitted to being a victim of domestic violence. Their divorce ended in February 1983.

AL GREEN’S CAREER
Green has always wanted to venture into music. He had tried singing like Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett and James Brown, Mitchell became his vocal mentor, training him to find his own voice. Prior to releasing her debut album with Hi, Green dropped the final ‘e’ from her name. Subsequently, he released 1969’s Green Is Blues, which was a moderate success. His album, 1971’s Al Green Gets Next to You, included the hit R&B cover of The Temptations’ “I Can’t Get Next to You,” recorded in a slow, blues-oriented version, and it also featured his first significant hit, ” Tired of Being Alone,” which sold one million copies and was certified gold, becoming the first of seven consecutive gold singles Green would record over the next two years.
After the incident with White, Green released his first gospel album, Lord Will Make a Way, released in 1980. He then co-starred with Patti LaBelle in the Broadway play, ‘Your Arms Too Short to Box with God (1982). He Is the Light Reunited with Green with Willie Mitchell was released in 1985, while 2 years later Soul Survivor featured the minor hit, ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’, which reached No. 22 on the R&B chart, his first success in the R&B top 40. since “I feel good” in 1978.
Al Green then returned to secular music in 1988 recording ‘Put a Little Love in Your Heart’ with Annie Lennox. The song became Green’s first top 10 pop hit since 1974. The soundtrack was featured in the film, Scrooged. He had a hit in 1989 with ‘The Message is Love’ with producer Arthur Baker, and 2 years later recorded the theme song for the short-lived show Good Sports.
Green received his 9th Grammy Award for his collaboration with Lyle Lovett for their duet of “Funny How Time Slips Away”.
Al Green has produced many soundtracks over the past few years, but on September 13, 2018, Al Green released his first new recording in almost ten years. Before the next tear falls, the most famous one recorded by Freddy Fender in 1975, was produced by Matt Ross-Spang and is part of Amazon Music’s new ‘Produced By’ series.
