Biography
On December 23, 1933, Akihito was born in Tokyo, Japan, in the Tokyo Imperial Palace. He is the oldest child of Empress Kojun and Emperor Showa. Akihito was the Chrysanthemum Throne’s Heir-Apparent at the time of his birth. He received the title Prince Tsugu as a kid and had private tutoring before attending Peers’ School from 1940 to 1952 for his primary and secondary education.
During the American firebombing assaults in 1945, he and his younger brother were evacuated. During the Allied occupation of Japan, Elizabeth Gray Vining taught Akihito the English language and Western etiquette. Later, he studied political science at Gakushuin University, but he didn’t graduate. In 1956, Akihito completed his undergraduate studies.
Career: As Emperor
The Investiture of Akihito as Crown Prince took place in 1952. The next year, he traveled for the first time outside of Japan to represent Japan at the coronation of Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom. He subsequently started to carry out the official obligations of the title. Following the passing of Emperor Hirohito in 1989, he officially ascended to the throne in 1990. He ruled over the Heisei Period, which was a time of international tranquility. From Noboru Takeshita to Shinzo Abe, Akihito was led by 17 different prime ministers throughout his rule. He conducted formal trips to all 47 of the nation’s prefectures as well as several of Japan’s isolated islands in an effort to try and bring the royal family closer to the people of Japan.
He paid tribute to those who had died at memorials and offered prayers at the Saipan location of a World War II combat in 2005. In 2011, in the wake of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami and the Fukushima I nuclear catastrophe, he made a historic televised appearance.
