Airtel launches 5G network access

Recently, Airtel Nigeria launched its 5G network in Lagos, joining the ranks of MTN Nigeria and Mafab Communications as the third operator to provide 5G services in the country. Airtel’s 5G network is now live in Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, and the Federal Capital Territory. The new managing director and CEO of Airtel Nigeria, Carl Cruz, emphasized that 5G is a significant advancement from 4G, offering a whole new range of possibilities. He highlighted applications such as end-to-end video creation with AI support, cloud computing, telemedicine, self-driving cars, cloud gaming, AI, virtual reality, the Internet of Things, and smart homes.

Airtel Nigeria aims to make 5G accessible to the average consumer and has partnered with Samsung to launch an affordable 5G-enabled phone priced at N122k. The Chief Commercial Officer, Femi Oshinlaja, emphasized the company’s commitment to democratizing 5G and making it user-friendly.

Airtel’s entry into the 5G market follows its successful bid for the 3.5GHz spectrum band for 5G deployment in December 2022, after missing out on obtaining a spectrum in December 2021 when Mafab Communications secured the license.
