HAUTE INTERVIEW: ADRIENNE MALOOF AND DR. PAUL NASSIF
HL: Tell me about your skincare line. How did it happen?
Dr. Paul Nassif: It’s interesting that I’m a facial plastic surgeon and Adrienne is one of the most knowledgeable people, except she’s a dermatologist, she knows a lot about skin. She’s tried hundreds of products and we thought we’d get into skincare. We combined our knowledge and tried 30 to 40 products, and after doing a lot of research, my colleague, Dr. Ron Moy, worked with DNA repair enzymes. It’s cutting edge technology, it’s not antioxidants, it’s cutting edge and it’s new. It actually repairs DNA damage caused by things like the sun. We just fell in love with the product.
Adrienne: Let me tell you what I like about these products, because I’ve tried everything. People throw things at him all the time being a plastic surgeon, he’s seen it all. Our partner is the president of the dermatology academy, when he gave these products to Paul and said try them, see what you think. I tried them for a year and fell in love. It’s the opposite of what everyone else does, they exfoliate and exfoliate where you get so thin. And then you go out in the sun, you stare at the sun, and you start to get hyperpigmentation because your skin is so thin. This product rebuilds your skin, it’s DNA repair. And the way it is delivered into the skin is through liposomes; it penetrates deep into the layers of the skin. That’s what I liked, is that they had spectacular results, quickly and without having to constantly exfoliate and lighten the skin. This is the difference between; that’s how we designed this product.
HL: Were you nervous about embarking on a new project? Because of how incredibly busy you are. We have already talked about it and you have a lot to do. You have three little boys and a bunch of other successful business ventures.
Adrienne: Yes (laughs)
HL: Because not only do you have busy work schedules, you have three boys.
Adrienne: Yes, we have three boys. We are never afraid to embark on a new project, we are afraid to work together (laughs). For us, this is the first time that we have worked together (apart from the Real Housewives). I know how to market; he knows the scientific aspect of it. So I think together it makes a great product.
HL: Does it help you to be with each other a little more since your schedules are so crazy? And you’re currently filming the third season of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, aren’t you?
Paul: It’s fun to do this together.
Adrienne: It’s fun that we’re being honest here. We will have our moments when he thinks one way, I think another way. And that’s part of the growing process and I think that makes for a better product. I can see things from another angle, just like him. We combine our knowledge and I think that makes for an amazing product.
HL: Will these skincare products be available in your Beverly Hills and New York offices?
Paul: These will be available in our offices. But also did heavy retail. I believe the first place it will be available is in Belk in the southeast. And then we talked to many retail outlets about the best place to transport the products.
HL : And what else do we have here? I see something light up in your hand.
Adrienne: Well, let me tell you, that’s what people go crazy for. It’s called OMG iPhone cases. You will see different prototypes. Were coming out in Apple, Best Buys, Target, Costco, in the next month. I thought about it about a month ago and my partner is the man who started sillybandz.
And I was talking about a new line of vodka called Zing vodka, which I partly own. It’s red velvet cake vodka, very luxurious, very sweet. It has LED light in it; you press a button, it lights up. But as I explain, I have my phone and someone said I like your phone case, but it wasn’t a case, it was light. And then I thought oh my God, let’s put the two together. The person I was talking to said my partner made sillybandz, he’s an inventor, maybe he can help and he did.
HL: It’s amazing.
Adrienne: You’ll see it in stores very soon. Were the first to use LED technology, it will be on the iPad and iTouch. You will see them everywhere.
HL: I love them!
Adrienne: I’ll send you one!
HL: As a successful entrepreneur, you always encourage ownership and participation in your various business activities. What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs?
Adrienne: The first thing is that you have to have passion. You have to believe in your product. Once you have the passion, it’s hard work. Don’t just talk about it, go for it. If you have this dream, go out and do what you believe in. But have the passion, because then it doesn’t work.
Paul: I will also add that you have to work hard. Most ethnic working people tend to be OK, but not fantastic. To be successful in any endeavor, you need to put that time and energy into something and work long, hard days. Whether on weekends or at night. You must constantly seek to improve things. It’s not a 9-5.
HL: You are currently filming the third season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. What can we expect from you in the new season?
Adrienne: There are definitely some surprises, more drama and all I’ll say is you’ll have to stay tuned.
