Biography and Career
Not much is known about Adijat Olarinoye apart from the fact that she was born on the 14th of July 1999 and has been making the Nation proud in recent years now.
She represented Nigeria at the 2019 African Games and claimed three medals including two gold medals in the women’s 55 kg weightlifting event.
She claimed gold medals in women’s 55 kg and 55 kg clean jerk events along with a silver in the 55 kg snatch event where she narrowly missed the gold medal to Chika Amalaha. However, she emerged as the gold medalist in the overall women’s 55 kg event while Chika Amalaha settled for the silver medal
On 26 August 2019, Adijat also created a new African record in weightlifting in the clean and jerk category by lifting 116 kg during the 2019 African Games. She won also the silver medal in the women’s 55 kg event at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Adijat’s recent victory at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, was the first Gold medal the country will be winning at the event. She also broke two games records in the Snatch category by lifting 90kg and 92kg in 10 minutes.
Adijat tried to lift 93kg on her last attempt, but she missed. However, she was the only athlete to lift more than 90kg, giving her a 3kg lead going into the Clean and Jerk. She lifted a combined 203kg during the event.
