SHREDDING ADAM WEITSMAN UPSTATE

Adam opened Upstate Shredding in the Tioga County Industrial Park in Owego, NY in 1997. By the late 1990s, the company was in danger of bankruptcy after business investments were made in a lagging metal industry

Adam, in 2004, served eight months in Otisville federal prison in New York, then another two and a half months in a halfway house for kite checks during the company’s financial difficulties that began in 1998.

Later in 2005, he acquired Upstate Shredding’s sister company, Ben Weitsman & Son, Inc., after his father’s retirement, and later in December 2009, he acquired an 11-acre scrapyard in Solvay, NY by Peter Matlow for $225,000.

At the end of 2009, Upstate Shredding was the largest privately owned scrap company on the East Coast. In March 2010, Upstate Shredding received the Tioga County Business of the Year Award.

Adam acquired a number of scrap companies and other properties, including a bankrupt scrap yard in New Castle, PA, between the years of 2012 and 2016. By the end of 2016, the properties and businesses were collectively known as Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling.

That same year, Adam won the Platts Industry Leadership Award and the AMM Scrap Company of the Year award for the second year in a row.

Later in May 2018, a U.S. District Judge found a former Weitsman Recycling employee guilty of defamation. The former employee had spread false claims about Adam online and was ordered to stop.

After starting Upstate Shredding, Adam Weitsman took out a $10 million loan to buy a state-of-the-art paper shredder, but as stock prices plummeted, acres of scrap metal piled up all over the machine as she remained inactive for almost two years. When his business was on the verge of bankruptcy, he chose to use his many accounts for check-kiting, for which he was arrested in 2003 and spent eight months in prison in 2004. According to him, prison transformed his life for the good. it made him more humble and allowed him to regain his business. In the mid-2010s, he experienced another scandal when a former employee accused him of throwing the body of murder victim Michele Harris into his car shredder in 2001.
