ESPN’s Adam Schefter was widely criticized for an interview in which he allowed NFL free agent Greg Hardy to paint a favorable picture of his 2014 domestic violence incident, but Schefter said he has no regrets. just a comment he made after the interview and not the substance of the conversation itself.
On Tuesday, the network’s NFL reporter told ‘The Dan Patrick Show’ after his chat with Hardy that he thought the player, currently a free agent with little interest, had ‘changed’, following a a controversial 2015 season with the Dallas Cowboys.
“I went in with the idea that everyone had, that this guy is a freak, okay? I went there thinking he was one of the scariest people in the NFL,” he told Patrick of his “exclusive” encounter with Hardy in Mississippi. “And I came away with a very different feeling about him. I came out of there feeling like he was a guy who managed to say the wrong things at the wrong times, who didn’t always make the right decisions.
“But I found him to be a changed type of guy, a guy who I think realizes he made a mistake, could have handled things differently when it came to this incident. It’s such a difficult thing. I would like to talk to more people before passing judgment. All I can say is what he said. I will say this; he didn’t hesitate, he was adamant: “I never touched that woman.” »
Schefter returned to those comments Wednesday during a discussion on WEEI’s “Dennis and Callahan Show.”
“Well look, we’ve all seen the character of Greg Hardy on the sidelines and in games,” the reporter said. “That’s what I expected. Ok, I should have been more specific in how I described it. It was a mistake on my part. I regret not having clarified this. But I have no regrets about the interview or the questions we asked – we went to him. And, again, for me, it was the situation as it was deteriorating. I should have been clearer, and I wasn’t. ‘
In the interview with Schefter, Hardy – who was charged with a domestic incident that allegedly involved guns and threatening an ex-girlfriend, with photos of his bruised body later appearing online – claimed that he had not been convicted and Schefter let it slip when Hardy said, “I have been proven not guilty.” However, Hardy was convicted in the summer of 2014 by a North Carolina judge and his sentence was overturned when he appealed for a jury trial. The victim, Nicole Holder, did not appear at trial and reportedly reached a settlement with Hardy, ending the legal case.
