- At the age of 12 he left the AFC Bournemouth Center of Excellence and joined Southampton Academy. Southampton paid Bournemouth £3,000 in compensation. When he signed his first scholarship contract they paid Southampton £5,000 and a further £10,000 when he signed a professional contract.
- In October 2006 he signed a new contract with Southampton, remaining committed to the club until December 2009. In August 2008 he signed another contract to extend his stay at the club for another 3 years.
- In April 2008 he scored his first professional goal in the Southampton Championship against West Bromwich Albion.
- He finished the 2010–11 season with 11 goals while being Championship PFA Team of the Year . He was also included in the PFA Team of the Year at the end of the following season.
