ADAM KINZINGER CAREER

While attending Illinois State University, he contested for election as a member of the McLean County, Illinois Board of Trustees in 1998. He won and became one of the youngest active county board members in McLean County history. He served on the board until 2003 when he resigned.

After graduating, he interned for former U.S. Senator Peter Fitzgerald under a program granted there.

In 2003 Kinzinger joined the United States Air Force and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in November 2003. He later received his pilot’s wings.

Initially, he was a KC-135 Stratotanker pilot and flew missions in South America, Guam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Later, Kinzinger transitioned to piloting the RC-26 surveillance aircraft and was posted twice to Iraq.

In February 2019, he was deployed to the US-Mexico border as part of efforts to maintain border security.

Adam in January 2009 met with Republican U.S. Congressmen Mike Pence, Mark Kirk, and Peter Roskam to discuss a possible run for Congress and chose to run in Illinois’ 11th Congressional District, held by US Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson. In May 2009, Adam began campaigning full time after returning from his third tour of Iraq.

In early fall, in the 11th congressional district, Adam held eight town halls attended by nearly 2,000 people. Adam was endorsed by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, and on February 2, 2010, Kinzinger won the five-candidate Republican primary with 64% of the vote. In the general election he was endorsed by the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times and on November 2, 2010 Kinzinger defeated Halvorson 57%-43%.

In 2014, in the Republican primary, Adam faced David Hale, nurse and founder of the Rockford Tea Party and Adam won with 78% of the vote.

Later in the general election, he faced Democratic candidate Randall Olsen and Adam won with 71% of the vote.

In 2016, during the Republican primary, Adam won with 100% of the vote and also, not 100% of the vote.

Later in 2018, Adam defeated Democratic challenger Sara Dady with 59.1% of the vote and he remained the only Republican representing a district north of Peoria.
