1. His mother raised him alone after he divorced his father.
2. He was exposed to music from a young age as his family owned a record store called Magic Disc Music . His mother ran the shop and he went there every day after school.
3. Although Ab-Soul has become a rapper, growing up, he mostly didn’t listen to hip-hop music. In his family business they mostly played R&B, jazz, gospel, blues and reggae. Hip hop music was shunned because of the profanity.
4. He wrote his first rap verse at age 12, giving beats to rapper Twistas, Emotions. He soon became fully interested in learning the craft.
5. After graduating high school, he signed a record deal with an independent record label called StreetBeat Entertainment in 2005.
6. In 2007 he signed the record deal with an indie record label, Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE). He had met TDE President and Chairman Punch in 2006, although he had been officially signed with StreetBeat before he began working with TDE.
7. Earlier in his career, he was a member of the rap duo called Area 51 alongside Brooklyn-based rapper Snake Hollywood.
8. Since his father served in the military, he had to spend the first 4 years of his life in Germany. After his parents decided to divorce, he moved with his mother to Carson, California, to his grandmother’s house.
