“When I was ten years old, I got very sick. It was quite a lively day. I caught a rare virus called Steven-Johnson Syndrome. And it really changed my life. It interfered with my vision and my skin pattern. It definitely put a huge blow to my hoop dreams. I even kept trying to play. I tried to keep playing with my sunglasses, it was really funny when I think about it now. A lot of my friends were really cool about it. It wouldn’t make me feel different or anything like that, but I just thought…I won’t have the precise vision of that.In his teenage years, however, Stevens was teased harshly about his condition: “When I got sick when I was younger, of course it affected the skin on my lips, so at school I had very dark lips and my eyes were low. I had to wear sunglasses and shit. So I was quite strange. People have teased me about my lips and say I look high. I didn’t even start smoking weed until I graduated from high school. »

AB SOUL YOUNG | CARRIER START

The rapper wrote his first verse – to the beat of Twista’s ‘Emotions’ when he was 12:

“I was like, I can do this; I will try it. And I wrote it. It is a day that I remember very well. From that moment, I had a very keen interest in the whole profession. Be a big fan of words and make the real connection with them. Say things that can open your eyes. I can say anything and I can turn heads.

Barely out of high school, he began to take his music career seriously:

“I just wanted to be tight with [my raps] but I was developing a passion for it. It wasn’t until I graduated from high school and enrolled in community college that I realized I wanted to be a full-time rapper. I probably did the equivalent of half a semester in total, in my presence. I tried one semester and dropped out, then tried another semester and dropped out. So it just didn’t work. ‘

“We are all different and I respect my difference. I just try to be myself at all times. As long as I do that, my music will always be different. ~Ab-Soul

“There are a lot of people in this world who listen to a wide range of music and there should never be a CERTAIN type of music that an artist should be confined to, in my opinion. ~Ab-Soul
