Aaron Sorkin Facts

  1. Sorkin was interested in acting from an early age, studying with drama teacher Arthur Storch at Syracuse University .
  2. A struggling actor, he worked odd jobs to make ends meet, including limo driver and bartender at the Broadway Palace Theater , delivering singing telegrams, distributing flyers for a hunting and fishing show, and more.
  3. He has frequently worked with television director Thomas Schlemme to create the “Walk and Talk” directional sequence, which takes the characters in a single tracking shot with no cuts as they move about the set and engage in lengthy conversations.
  4. The idea for his play A Few Good Men came to him from his sister Deborah Sorkin, who at the time was working as a US Navy Judge Advocate General Corps . The main plot was inspired by her experience defending a group of Marines who were accused of attempting to kill a fellow Marine (in a damaging incident) on behalf of a senior officer.
  5. Sorkin was motivated to write an open letter to his teenage daughter, Roxy, and her mother, Julia Bingham, following Donald Trump’s election as president in 2016.
  6. His long-standing battle with drug addiction began in 1987 with marijuana and cocaine. Initially, he began abusing cocaine to relieve himself of nervous tension to which he was regularly subjected. In 2001, he finally kicked the habit.
  7. In April 2001, he was arrested at Burbank Airport for possession of illegal drugs such as hallucinogenic mushrooms, crack cocaine and marijuana. He then entered a drug diversion program in June 2001.
  8. His writing process is very energetic, reading his lines and acting out each character. Once he got so wrapped up in writing a fight sequence that he accidentally fell into the mirror and broke his nose.
  9. He is not active on social media.
