1.Uber Exits Nigeria After 12 Years of Operations

Uber has shut down its ride-hailing services in Nigeria with immediate effect from September 2, 2026, ending its 12-year presence in the country after launching in Lagos in 2014.

Why Uber Left Nigeria

The company said the decision followed a review of its business priorities and investment focus across Africa. Uber said the withdrawal was limited to Nigeria and Uganda and was unrelated to recent airport operational directives.

The exit affects drivers, riders and staff in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and other cities. Uber support centres will remain open until September 23 to resolve outstanding issues.

The move comes amid a wider global restructuring in which Uber is cutting about 3,300 jobs, representing roughly 10 per cent of its workforce, while redirecting resources towards autonomous vehicles.

2. House Clears Gbajabiamila in PFIPC Probe, Uncovers Forged Documents

The House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee investigating the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council has cleared Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, of involvement in the organisation.

58 Bank Accounts Linked to Suspect

The committee said its preliminary findings released on September 2 showed no evidence that Gbajabiamila authorised, signed or participated in the creation or activities of the PFIPC.

Investigators also determined that a purported appointment letter naming Adeniyi Adeyemi as Director-General of the organisation was forged and falsely attributed to the Presidency.

About 58 bank accounts and more than a dozen entities were linked to Adeyemi through identifying details, while an alleged N400 million transaction remains under scrutiny.

The panel also found no valid Act of the National Assembly or presidential order establishing the PFIPC and recommended further investigation and possible prosecution.

3. Court Adjourns Atiku’s Suit Challenging Tinubu’s 2027 Eligibility

A Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned until September 28 a suit filed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the African Democratic Congress seeking to disqualify President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from contesting the 2027 presidential election.

Court Rejects Substituted Service

The adjournment followed disagreement over personal service of the originating summons on Tinubu, with Justice Inyang Ekwo declining to permit substituted service at this stage.

The plaintiffs allege that Tinubu presented a forged National Youth Service Corps discharge certificate bearing an incorrect name. The allegation remains before the court and has not been established as fact.

Justice Ekwo also warned lawyers involved in the case against discussing the proceedings in the media or on social media.

4. Defence Headquarters Explains US Troop Withdrawal from Nigeria

The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that about 200 United States troops deployed to Nigeria earlier in 2026 for counter-terrorism support in the Lake Chad Basin will be withdrawn by late September.

Nigeria-US Security Cooperation Continues

Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the drawdown followed the completion of specific operational objectives and did not signal a breakdown in the broader Nigeria-US security partnership.

He said intelligence sharing, training and information cooperation between both countries would continue, with smaller advisory teams remaining.

The troops had supported training, surveillance and counter-terrorism operations, including a joint operation that killed a senior Islamic State leader.

5. Naira Strengthens to N1,326.69 Per Dollar as Reserves Rise

The naira appreciated to N1,326.69 per dollar at the official foreign exchange market on September 2, strengthening from the previous session’s N1,329.43 rate.

Foreign Reserves Hit $53.90 Billion

Nigeria’s gross external reserves rose to $53.90 billion as of September 1, while the parallel market rate remained around N1,400 per dollar.

The latest gain keeps the naira around its strongest levels in more than two years and comes amid rising oil-related inflows and tighter monetary policy.

Higher foreign reserves provide the country with a stronger buffer against external shocks and support efforts to maintain currency stability.

6. NNPC Remits N7.91 Trillion to Federation Account in Seven Months

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has reported N7.913 trillion in statutory remittances to the Federation Account between January and July 2026.

NNPC Records N3.08 Trillion Revenue in July

NNPC recorded N3.087 trillion in revenue and N279 billion in profit after tax in July alone.

However, crude oil and condensate production fell to 1.68 million barrels per day during the month amid operational disruptions.

The company said pipeline availability remained high and outlined measures to restore output as its remittances continue to support government finances.

7. Navy Uncovers Illegal Refining Sites, Recovers 99,000 Litres in Rivers and Delta

The Nigerian Navy has uncovered three suspected illegal refining sites and six reservoirs containing about 99,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil and illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil in Rivers and Delta states.

Operations Target Oil Theft

The discoveries were made on August 31 by personnel of NNS SOROH and NNS DELTA following intelligence-led operations.

The sites contained a large refining oven and storage facilities used to process and store suspected stolen petroleum products.

The operation is part of ongoing efforts to disrupt illegal refining and oil theft in the Niger Delta.

8. Diphtheria Outbreak Kills 23 in Plateau State

A diphtheria outbreak in Plateau State has killed 23 people and produced 143 suspected cases in recent weeks, health authorities confirmed on September 2.

Jos North Records Majority of Cases

Most of the suspected cases were recorded in Jos North Local Government Area, while nine patients remain hospitalised under isolation at Jos University Teaching Hospital and Plateau Specialist Hospital.

Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Nicholas Baamlong, identified late presentation by patients and shortages of diphtheria antitoxin and specialised sample containers as major challenges.

The state has intensified community sensitisation, quarantine measures and engagement with traditional leaders to contain the outbreak.

9. Floods Paralyse Parts of Abuja as Wike Orders Investigation

Heavy rainfall on September 1 submerged parts of Airport Road, Lugbe, Wuye and other areas of the Federal Capital Territory, causing severe traffic gridlock and stranding motorists.

Wike Threatens Demolition of Illegal Structures

Floodwaters disrupted movement along major routes, including roads leading to the airport.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ordered the Federal Capital Development Authority and Development Control Directorate to investigate the causes of the flooding, including the possible role of structures built on waterways.

Wike said buildings found to have violated the Abuja Master Plan would be demolished.
