Delta Governor Faces Backlash Over Tinubu’s Re-Election Priority Remark

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is facing criticism online after a video resurfaced showing him describing President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election as his “number one project” amid renewed complaints about poor roads in Asaba and other parts of the state.

Oborevwori Backs Tinubu’s Re-Election

Oborevwori made the remarks during an interview with ARISE News in June 2026, where he urged Deltans to support Tinubu for a second term.

“I’m begging people to vote for President Bola Tinubu. It’s my number one project. That project is bigger than any other project because it will help us achieve more for our people,” the governor said.

He also defended Tinubu’s economic reforms, saying they had increased Delta’s revenue and helped the state pay contractors and execute infrastructure projects.

Oborevwori said he had “street credibility” and dismissed opposition threats ahead of the 2027 elections.

Video Draws Road Complaints

On August 22, X user @Admiral_Cyborg shared part of the interview, criticising the governor over the condition of roads in Asaba.

The post was accompanied by the comment: “Tinubu is your number one project, but Asaba road is a mess. Very hopeless man.”

The video attracted reactions from users who questioned the governor’s priorities and pointed to deteriorating roads in parts of Delta State.

Benin-Asaba Road Remains a Concern

The criticism also comes amid complaints about the Benin-Asaba Expressway, also known as the Benin-Agbor-Asaba corridor.

The Federal Government began reconstruction of the approximately 125-kilometre dual carriageway in March 2025 under a public-private partnership. The project is expected to improve movement between the South-South, South-East and South-West regions.

However, road users have continued to report poor conditions on some sections of the route. Recent complaints from motorists and residents have included potholes, muddy sections, erosion, congestion and long travel delays.

Governor Highlights Infrastructure Projects

Oborevwori’s administration has continued to defend its record on infrastructure, approving funding for road and drainage projects across the state and commissioning completed sections.

The governor has also linked improved state finances and the implementation of infrastructure projects to increased revenue following reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration.

Despite this, complaints over local roads in Asaba and deteriorating sections of major transport corridors remain a recurring issue among residents and motorists.

2027 Politics Intensifies

The renewed debate comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gather momentum across Delta State.

Supporters of Oborevwori argue that his administration has invested heavily in infrastructure and benefited from cooperation with the Federal Government, while critics say visible road problems raise questions about the priorities of the state government.

Asaba roads, Delta State infrastructure and Oborevwori’s support for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election are expected to remain part of the political conversation as the election approaches.
