Last week I met a pretty Lady who said she doesn’t watch other types of Movies, aside from Nigerian movies. I’ve never been so shocked in my entire life because I can’t imagine myself missing out on some American movies to sit down with Nollywood.

I began to wonder how she does it, like how can you watch a Nigerian movie and not get angry, is it the whack storyline, the terrible acting, or the embarrassing graphic editing.

I am not here to bash the Nigeria Movie Industry, of course, there are filmmakers that give us quality content all the time, Filmmakers like, Tunde Kelani, The Afolayans, Funke Akindele, and the likes.

But there are just too many wannabes in the industry contaminating the works of those that have worked effortlessly to put the Industry on the spot it is today.

So here are Five Nollywood movies I’ve seen and I enjoyed

  1. IBI GIGA – Ibi Giga is an old Yoruba Classical Movie produced by Segun Ogungbe, I can’t really remember the details of the movie because I watched it while I was still very young, but what I can remember is that was the first movie that stirred emotions in me. A lot of people have also testified crying when they saw the movie for the first time, the movies talked about the struggle of an average Nigerian from poverty to wealth, the main cast, Segun Ogungbe went through several tribulations in the search for wealth, I stated earlier I cant really recall the details of the movie but it is topping my list because of its emotional prestige.
  2. ARAROMIRE; THE FIGURINE: The Figurine is probably one the best movie of all time. The movie produced by Kunle Afolayan,  tells the story of two corp member who stole a mystical sculpture in an abandoned shrine,  Unknown to them, the sculpture is from the goddess ‘Araromire’ which bestows seven years of good luck on anyone who encounters it, and after the seven years have expired, seven years of bad luck follow. The lives of the two friends begin to change for good, as they become successful and wealthy businessmen. However, after seven years, things start to change for the worse.
  3. OCTOBER 1st: Another Movie produced by Kunle Afolayan, The film, which was set in Colonial Nigeria, narrates the story of Danladi Waziri (Sadiq Daba), a police officer from Northern Nigeria who is posted to a remote town of Akote in Western Nigeria to investigate the frequent female murder cases in the community, and have the mystery solved before the Nigerian flag is raised on October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day.
  4. Aye Kooto: another Yoruba Movie but produced by Ibrahim Chatta, the movies tell a story of a girl (late Bisi Komolafe) who planned her own abduction with her friends along the line, things took an extremely unexpected turn when she died amidst the planned abduction, making her friends look responsible for her death. The movie also has a subplot based loosely on greedy men, and what they would do for money and power.
  5. Sugar Rush: Sincerely speaking the only reason I enjoyed this movie was because of Bola (I don’t even know her real name) The way she acted in the movie was superb. the role seems so Natural to her. Bola aside, the movie storyline was ok but they were very obvious mistakes in it, scenes that do not conjure with our reality,  the ending part was very poor like every other Nigerian movie, I guessed they rushed it and Banky role was supposed to be given to another person it wasn’t really suitable on him.

Notable mentions

  1. The Wedding Party
  2. Jennifer diary the first two season (the rest are trash)
