2023: Tinubu, Atiku, Saraki: Is there a presidential candidates?

As the 2023 general election draws nearer, we are plagued with who to trust in the coming period; since the majority believed the Buhari-led federal government has failed us.

Aside from others, we have Tinubu, Atiku, Saraki who silently are paving the way for their presidential pursuit; the President of Nigeria no doubt is elected using a modified two-round system. To be elected in the first round, a candidate must receive a majority of the vote and over 25% of the vote in at least 24 of the 36 states. If no candidate passes this threshold, a second-round will be held.

According to data obtained from the Independent National Electoral Commission, the voting pattern in Nigeria’s recent presidential elections points to the north as a major decider of how the outcome usually pans.

Apart from having a higher number of voters (44.8m compared to the south’s 39.1m), northern Nigeria also has a more active voting population.

However, using the past administrative records of this trio, Tinubu, Atiku, and Saraki, do you think either of them worth your vote?

Among the persons that are favorites to inherit Buhari’s bloc vote – in the race to lead the world’s most populous black nation – Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar is a known figure. He served as vice-president from 1999 to 2007 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), whose 16-year rule was ended by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015.

As Buhari, Atiku – a multimillionaire entrepreneur – is a northern Muslim and has had a long-time presidential ambition that dates back to 1992 during the botched Third Republic.

Since then, he has contested for president on four more occasions. Although he is yet to declare his intention to run again in 2023, his close associates – and his gestures – say his eyes remain on Aso Rock, Nigeria’s seat of power.

Tinubu

Although, the former Lagos governor, Bola Tinubu understands Nigeria’s elite politics very well, and could be a better president than most as opined by most people, too many things are jostling to disqualify him for the presidency in 2023.

Sincerely, Tinubu doesn’t look well to say the least and we don’t want another Yar’adua, or a Buhari as president come 2023. The challenges are tough enough without having another president spending half his presidency in foreign hospitals.

He hasn’t officially declared his intention to take a shot at the Presidency, he previously said in 2016: “It depends on the timing; it depends on the environment and what political leadership dictates. I will not brush aside such an aspiration…”.

No doubt the former Senate President’s journey to Nigeria’s Aso Villa – the workplace and official residence of the president of Nigeria – will be very rocky at best.

As is common in Nigerian politics, he has made some enemies on his way to the top. His star has also been on the wane.

Once, after defecting to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2018, Saraki launched his presidential ambitions which ended as he lost the primary to former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, who later lost the national election to Muhammadu Buhari. However, they are scintillating activities that suggest he might be hoarding another presidential ambition before launching it to the world.
