Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday, February 21, allayed fears surrounding the country’s unity ahead of the 2023 election.

In his speech at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)’s Council of the WISE strategic retreat and planning workshop which was held in Lagos, Jonathan expressed hope of the country being united after the election.

He said; “When elections are coming, there is always this fear that the country will implode. But you see that the country has remained stable.

“When I was in office, (during) the 2015 elections, some people were sending words out of the country, but nothing happened at the end of the day. So 2023 will come and go and this country will remain.”

The former Nigerian President also expressed confidence in the ability of ECOWAS to solve the numerous challenges confronting the sub-region.

Recall that Jonathan has categorically stated that he has no interest  to run for the presidency in the  coming 2023 Presidential election

He claimed that reports about his interest in contesting the 2023 presidential election in Nigeria were only speculations.

The former President disclosed this while speaking at a condolence visit to the Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa on the death of his father, Sir Okorie Okowa at the Government House in Asaba.

In his words: “On the rumour of my interest in the 2023 presidential election, it was mere speculation.

“I will continue to serve God, humanity, Africa, and the world to the best of my ability and with all sense of commitment and sincerity.”
