Edward Hardwicke was the affable doctor Watson in the famous British series broadcast between 1984 and 1994, which for many fans of the character is the best television version. The actor passed away on Monday, May 16, 2011, at the age of 78.

Born in the British capital on August 7, 1932, Edward Hardwicke was the son of the famous actor Sir Cedric Hardwicke ( The rope , Suspicion ) and the actress Helena Pickard ( Always and a day ). Thus, it is not surprising that he made his debut as an actor immediately, specifically when he was 10 years old, along with Spencer Tracy , in Two in Heaven .

A student of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), he worked in the London theater. In cinema, he had outstanding performances in films such as Hell Below Zero , although he began to become popular with the general public thanks to television, for his role as Captain Pat Grant, in the mythical series The Colditz Escape . When actor David Burke left the series The Return of Sherlock Holmes, he suggested that Hardwicke be his successor, and thanks to her he became a celebrity. He came to repeat his role in the theater with the actor who played Sherlock Holmes, the late Jeremy Brett .

And, curiously, he played Arthur Conan Doyle in Photographing Fairies (1997). He was the brother of CS Lewis in Shadowlands (1993), the grandfather of the boy in love in Love Actually (2003) and Mr. Brownlow, the man who takes the protagonist in after he is wrongly accused of stealing in Oliver Twist (2005) . by Roman Polanski .

Divorced from his first wife, he was united to Prim Cotton, until her death. He is survived by his two daughters.
