Drugs have been a staple of the Hollywood lifestyle since the emaciated ’70s. The stories of Hollywood legends like Jack Nicholson and Robert De Niro throwing drug-filled parties have received their fair share of publicity, even helping several stars achieve distinctive cult popularity. And over the years, Hollywood’s fascination with drugs has only increased.

Young stars’ accounts of getting sucked into the depraved world of drugs are fairly common. Also published is the number of confessions made by Hollywood celebrities who have gone public about their drug problems and addictions. And these confessions are not the only source of information. Every once in a while, stories pop up in the media about stars arrested for drug possession.

However, sometimes the celebrities with the help of the best lawyers manage to sweep such stories under the rug. So, without further delay, here is the list of celebrities caught in the act with drugs.

  • Mischa Barton

The English actress, best known for her role as Marissa Cooper on the Fox television series ‘The OC,’ had to spend a night behind bars after she was found driving under the influence of alcohol and in possession of marijuana. The incident happened on December 27, 2007 when she was arrested by police in the early hours of the morning in West Hollywood, California. Police saw her crossing the lanes and not signaling a turn. Police also determined that she was an unlicensed driver and was under the influence of alcohol. Mischa was arrested and released seven hours later by the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station on $10,000 bail. She was also fined a hefty $10.

  • Dionne Warwick

On May 12, 2002, Dionne Warwick, the five-time Grammy Award winner, was accused of possessing less than 5 grams of marijuana. The famous singer, who was 61 at the time of the arrest, was allegedly carrying 11 suspected marijuana cigarettes in an empty lipstick case. She was caught by the burlap catchers at Miami International Airport, who noticed the lipstick case in her carry-on. Due to the incident, she was put in a cell and had to miss her flight to Los Angeles. The charges were later dropped after she agreed to negotiate a plea deal that included a drug treatment program. However, Warwick later claimed she never did drugs and that someone may have slipped a lipstick case in her open pocket.

On January 23, 2008, Lil Wayne was arrested along with two friends by Border PatrolAgents near Yuma, Arizona. Officers had stopped his tour bus and after a thorough search through the canines, it was discovered that Wayne had three guns on the bus in addition to drugs. The drugs recovered contained 105g of marijuana, almost 29g of cocaine and 41g of ecstasy. He was subsequently charged with four felonies: possession of narcotics for sale, possession of dangerous drugs, weapon misconduct, and possession of drug paraphernalia. However, this wasn’t the first or last incident in which the famous rapper was arrested for possession of firearms and drugs. On December 18, 2009, Wayne and 11 others were arrested at the Falfurrias, Texas checkpoint by Border Patrol agentsafter an unknown amount of marijuana was found on two of his tour buses.

Macaulay Culkin is a perfect example of the child actor who has struggled to find widespread fame. Culkin, who became immensely popular for his role as the innocent devil in the classic film Home Alone, has struggled with his drug problem for years. On September 17, 2004, a car in Oklahoma City was pulled over for driving at 62 mph in a 62 mph speed zone and making a wrong lane change. The driver of the car, a New York City man, allowed police to search the vehicle. After the search, police authorities determined that Culkin, who was in the back seat, possessed 17.3 grams of marijuana and two controlled substances, 16.5 milligrams of alprazolam and 32 milligrams of clonazepam. After pleading guilty Culkin was sentenced to three one-year terms. He is currently transitioning from prescribed drugs to cocaine.

The R&B singer and her husband, manager/producer Todd Russaw were pulled over after police found the car’s temporary sticker was missing an expiration date. Evans’ 2003 Hummer H2 reeked of burnt marijuana, prompting authorities to conduct a thorough search of the vehicle. The couple were forced to stay at the Fulton County Jail and were eventually charged with possession of cocaine and less than an ounce of marijuana. In exchange for stopping further law enforcement, the couple agreed to spend 13 weeks in a drug treatment program. Evans cleaned up and in addition to the success as a singer, she also tasted success as an actress and as a writer.

Before becoming an outsider actor who has gained notoriety and is one of the highest paid actors, Robert Downey Jr. was a wild child. In the ’90s, RDJ had a lifestyle made up of hard parties, drug use and heavy drinking. In April 1996, he was arrested for possession of heroin, cocaine and a discharged .357 Magnum handgun after he stopped on Sunset Boulevard to speed. Things got worse for the young star when, a month later, while still on probation, he entered the neighbor’s property under the influence of controlled substances and ended up sleeping in the 11-year-old’s bed. In 1999, he was arrested again for missing drug tests. The judge sentenced him to three years in the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and state prison. However, due to his good behavior, he was released a year later. RDJ has been sober since 2003.

Professionally, DMX has over 30 million records worldwide and is recognized as one of the top hip hop artists. But due to his drug addiction, his personal life has become a laughing stock over the years. He was repeatedly arrested by federal authorities for drug offenses. In October 1999 he was sentenced to two months in prison for assaulting a police officer while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. It was reported that the officer needed 13 stitches in his head. He was arrested in March 2000 for possession of marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy and percocet. Then, in June 2004, he was arrested in the detention center at John F. Kennedy International Airportcriminally charged with possession of cocaine, impersonating, criminal possession of a weapon and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. To his credit, DMX has attempted to kick his cocaine habit. He even championed Iyanla Vanzant, known for her influential self-help books.

On April 10, 2015, Nelly joined the long list of rappers blasted with drugs. Nelly’s tour bus was pulled over by authorities for non-compliant U.S. Department of Transportation and International Fuel Tax Association decals, eventually resulting in Tennessee State Troopers searching the vehicle. During the search, soldiers found methamphetamine, marijuana, over 100 ziplock bags, numerous handguns and a gold-plated .50 caliber Desert Eagle pistol. The rapper was jailed at the Putnam County Jail. He was subsequently charged with the felonies of possession of drugs, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Like many celebrities before him, Nelly blamed the entire episode for the presence of “shady characters” on his tour bus.
