Tems is a Nigerian singer whose real name is Temilade Openiyi who recently gained her popularity in the music industry as she was featured in the “Essence” one of the hit songs in the recent album of Wizkid ‘Made In Lagos
The 26-year-old alt-R&B singer navigates her life and communicates her music through that titillating state of mind that allows us to be as real and true to ourselves as we possibly can. BIOGRAPHY
Temilade Openiyi, Tems was born on June 11, 1995, in Lagos, Nigeria. Born to a Nigerian mother and a British father, her family moved to the United Kingdom shortly after birth. Her parent divorced when she was five and relocated to Ilupeju before moving to Lekki, then Ajah.
EDUCATION
The songwriter had most of her early education in Ilupeju. She later attended Dowen College in Lekki until her mother relocated to Ajah permanently. Shortly after her graduation from secondary school, Tems left Nigeria for South Africa for her tertiary education. She eventually graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics
CAREER
Tems started singing at a tender age. she would sing while her brother played the guitar. During her secondary school days, she picked up learning the piano. She joined the school’s choir when she was 11 years old without the knowledge of anyone in the family. Tems would train with her teacher because she taught her voice was too heavy and wrong. She remarked that Beyonce’s music was the first to influence her love for making her own songs. She loved singing along to Destiny’s Child’s hit songs, “Soldier” and “Survivor”.
In 2018 Tems recorded Mr Rebel a song of her own composition. Tems released the single Try Me In August 2019. It became a major hit and currently has over 5.6 million views on YouTube. In 2020, DJ Edu chose her as one of the “ten artists to watch” that year. She was selected that year by American singer Khalid to join him and fellow Nigerian Davido on an Afrobeats remix of Know Your Worth. Her collaboration with Wizkid on their song Essence earned her a number one spot on BBC 1Xtra Airplay Chart as of 30 January 2021, and she was nominated for BET Award 2021
