10 Most Destructive Hurricanes In US History
Sadly, hurricanes can cause disaster. The United States has seen a lot of powerful, hazardous, and catastrophic storms over the years. These tropical storms have cost tens of billions of dollars in damage, forced people from their homes, and worst of all, killed people. The 10 most destructive hurricanes in US history in the previous years are listed in this article.
1. Hurricane Katrina, August 23, 2005 – August 31, 2005
Hurricane Katrina, which caused $108 billion in damage in 2005, surpassed all other hurricanes in American history in terms of cost. It was also among the five deadliest hurricanes to hit the United States.
2. Hurricane Andrew, August 16, 1992 – August 28, 1992
Hurricane Andrew was the most devastating hurricane to ever hit the United States when it made landfall in 1992. Damage of $26.5 billion, or $44.4 billion in 2017 dollars, is its fault. When inflation is taken into account, Andrew is the third-most expensive hurricane in recorded history.
3. Hurricane Sandy, October 22, 2012 – November 2, 2012
Damage from Hurricane Sandy totaled $75 billion. It affected 24 states in all including the whole eastern shore of the United States, from Florida to Maine.
4. Galveston hurricane, August 27, 1900 – September 12, 1900
The Galveston Storm of 1900, also referred to as the Great Galveston Hurricane and the Galveston Flood and locally as the 1900 Storm or the Great Storm of 1900, is the deadliest natural disaster in American history.
5. Hurricane Harvey, August 17, 2017
In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey, a deadly Category 4 hurricane, struck Texas and Louisiana, bringing catastrophic floods and more than 100 fatalities.
6. Hurricane Maria, September 16, 2017
Maria started out in the Indian Ocean and traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to the west, picking up speed and strength as she went. Dominica in the Caribbean was its first land target, as it unloaded 23 inches of rain. Maria then turned north and slammed into Puerto Rico, causing widespread destruction, including power outages that lasted for months.
The hurricane continued north along the Atlantic Ocean shoreline, striking Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. It eventually traveled further north to Cape Race, Newfoundland, before dissipating in the Atlantic.
7. Sea Island Hurricane, August 1893
In the Caribbean Sea, not far from the Lesser Antilles islands, the Sea Island Hurricane developed after developing in the Atlantic Ocean. The Sea Islands are a series of isles off the coasts of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. As it traveled through the Bahamas on its way north, it dragged a fury of strong winds across them. Up the Atlantic coast, the Sea Island Hurricane eventually made landfall in Savannah, Georgia. One of South Carolina’s worst hurricanes ever, Sea Island contributed to the economic downturn in Beaufort County.
9. 1928 Okeechobee hurricane, September 6, 1928
One of the most catastrophic hurricanes ever is considered to be the San Felipe-Okeechobee hurricane. This storm developed over the Atlantic, picked up speed as it crossed the Leeward Islands, and finally hit Puerto Rico. From there, it traveled northwest across the Bahamas, intensifying more, and eventually touched down in Palm Beach, Florida. The area of Florida’s Lake Okeechobee that sustained the most damage as a result of the storm surges was there. After tearing over portions of the Great Lakes region and eastern North Carolina, the hurricane gradually dissipated.
10. Hurricane Camille, August 14, 1969 – August 22, 1969
Only four Category 5 storms have made landfall in the U.S. since 1900, including Hurricane Camille. Along the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Camille made landfall. The hurricane’s true maximum sustained winds are unknown because the storm destroyed all wind-recording equipment in the region. However, estimations suggest that the hurricane’s highest sustained winds were around 175 mph along the shore, delivering a storm tide of more than 24 feet. Southeast Mississippi, Dauphin Island, the coast of Alabama, and the Mobile metro region sustained the most damage. 256 people died as a result of the storm, and damage totaled more than $1.4 billion.
