Visitor Biography (Eduardo Cabra)

Showing an interest in music from an early age, Visitante took piano lessons from the famous teacher, José Acevedo. He began his music studies at the Music Conservatory and then attended the Manolo Acosta School of Arts, experimenting and mastering the saxophone and flute, as well as the piano. Eventually, he taught himself the classical guitar.

His mother, Rosa Iris Martínez, is a medical technologist and his father, José Cabra González, is a publicist and musician. Visitante met his stepbrother René Pérez from him when they were both two years old, when “Residente’s” mother married “Visitor’s” father. Her family has developed strong ties to the artistic community of Puerto Rico. His stepbrother, Residente de El, claims that he and his family lived a relatively comfortable life growing up, placing them in a group of Puerto Ricans who are “too poor to be rich and too rich to be poor.”

Resident, brother of VisitorEduardo was born in Santurce into a family linked to the arts and from a very young age he knew that his future would be tied to music in one way or another.

Although their parents later divorced, the step-siblings remained close. Her pseudonym comes from the identification routine that a security guard guarding 13th Street used to ask for. “Visitor or resident?” , she used to ask everyone who entered the neighborhood where his father’s house was located, in Trujillo Alto.

Early years in the artistic career of Visitante (Eduardo Cabra)

He began playing the piano at the age of 6. He participated together with René in the school band where he played piano and saxophone. In addition to music, he was also passionate about baseball. In his teens he joined the musical group Kampo Viejo, a Ska band, in which he played piano and saxophone. After several years with them, he left the group to create his own, Bayanga, where he began to explore other musical genres creating fusions with music from Brazil, reggae, ska and rumba. By then, he had already completed two bachelor’s degrees at the University of Puerto Rico: one in Computer Science and another in Accounting.

After a time with Bayanga, a group with which he had his first radio success with the song Solo los locos, he decided to leave the group and create another with a new musical concept. This coincided with the moment when René asked him to compose music for him so that he could rap and thus share his songs on the internet.

Music for Eduardo is a matter of blood. He inherited it from his father, as did his brothers José and Ileana. He was just a boy who was running on Calle 13 in Trujillo Alto, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, when he chose the nickname that would accompany him all his life: ‘ Visitor ‘. This is how he announced to the security guard to let him into René’s house after his parents separated from him.

Visitor and his passage through Calle 13

After experimenting for several years participating as a musician in different local bands, he rose to world fame with the band Calle 13, which he founded with his brother René (Residente) and of which he was musical director, arranger and producer. The band also included iLe , the other sister of Residente and half-sister of Visitante.

iLe is the half-sister of Visitant

Shortly after, he would meet with Elías de León, president of White Lion and they would record their first album with René Pérez, Residente. Some of the musicians chosen for this new band had been members of Bayanga, and to this day continue with Calle 13, among them: Héctor (Coco) Bárez, Andrés (Kino) Cruz, Mark Rivera, Arturo Vergés and Ismael Cancel. Visitante has been a musician for most of his life, but it wasn’t until 2004 that he started making music with his stepbrother Residente de él, giving the band the name Calle 13.

The stepbrothers hosted their music on a website and began looking for a record label to release their music commercially. After submitting demos to White Lion Records, the duo were offered a record deal. The duo gained recognition for their controversial song “Querido FBI” , which responded to the assassination of Filiberto Ojeda Ríos, a key figure in the Puerto Rican independence movement. Visitante’s influences come from many musical genres. Artists who influenced him include salsa master Rubén Blades, singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez, and writer Tite Curet Alonso.

Calle 13 quickly became, and under Eduardo’s musical direction, one of the most relevant groups in Latin America and the world, receiving a record number of 21 Latin Grammy Awards, being the artist or group with the most awards at a ceremony. In addition, the project was awarded three Grammy Awards (US).

Visitor after his separation with Calle 13

After a ten-year career, in 2015 ‘Residente’ and ‘Visitor’ decided to pack their bags in search of other directions. René followed his path as a soloist and Eduardo as a music producer.

After Calle 13’s hiatus in 2015, Eduardo dedicated himself fully to music production, where he is characterized by giving a global stamp to the music he creates, bringing musical influences from all over the world without losing the essence of the artist he records. . Eduardo has produced for Diana Fuentes, Vicente García, Shakira, La Vida Boheme, Monsieur Periné, Chambao, Gustavo Cordera and Jorge Drexler, among others.
Subsequently, he stayed away from the stage for three years and since 2018 he returned with Trending Tropics, a project carried out with four hands together with the Dominican Vicente García. A proposal that, as his name says, fuses the tropical with the viral, the organic with the synthetic, music with technology.

Eduardo Cabra currently directs La Casa del Sombrero , a cultural exchange project that will serve as a production house for different artists and bands from around the world, while serving as a cultural center and exchange of global ideas.

He likes to produce, manufacture, create. His trade is comparable to that of a craftsman, a builder or a carpenter. A man who keeps in his hands the formula so that all the pieces fit together. A musician who knows his Puerto Rican roots, respects them and knows how to give them electronic and urban notes to conceive new rhythms.

In February 2020 he participated as a producer for the singer Riccie Oriach who, after presenting his first EP, “Viaje al infinito” was now preparing to present ” Mi derriengue “, a work in which he has had the production of Eduardo Cabra “Visitante” .
