Beginnings in the life of Claudia Sheinbaum

Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, current Head of Government of Mexico City, is a politician, scientist, activist and writer. She was born on June 24, 1962 in the country’s capital. She comes from a Jewish family, although her parents were born in Mexico. She is the daughter of chemist Carlos Sheinbaum Yoselevitz (descendant of Jewish migrants from Lithuania) and biologist Annie Pardo Cemo (descendant of Jewish migrants from Bulgaria), both of whom participated in the 1968 student movement.

Claudia Sheinbaum studied Physics at the Faculty of Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). In 1989 she obtained her degree with her thesis “Thermodynamic study of a domestic wood-burning stove for rural use”. She subsequently studied for a master’s degree in Energy Engineering and in 1995 she graduated as a doctor in Environmental Engineering.

With a scholarship from UNAM, Claudia Sheinbaum  carried out research work at the Lawrence Bekerly National Laboratory (LBL) of the California Department of Energy, United States. At the Colegio de México she studied the Advanced Studies Program in Sustainable Development and Environment (LEAD-Mexico) of the Center for Demographic, Urban and Environmental Studies and the Advanced Studies Program in Sustainable Development.

Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum is part of the  National System of Researchers and the Mexican Academy of Sciences. She is a researcher at the Institute of Engineering of the UNAM and the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Climate Change of the UN on the subject of energy and industry. She contributed to the theme “Climate Change Migration” of the United Nations Fourth Assessment Report, which won the Nobel Peace Prize. She also worked as an advisor to the National Commission for Energy Savings and the Economic Studies Management of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).

Among the distinctions that Claudia Sheinbaum  has received are the Maestro Jesús Silva Herzog Annual Economic Research Award, the Young Investigator Award from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in technological innovation and the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Award, which recognizes excellence in literary work of women in Spanish in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In addition to being a scientist, researcher and writer, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has ventured into politics and public administration. In 1987 she was part of the group of activists and political groups that supported the presidential candidacy of Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas and that ultimately founded the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). From 2000 to 2006, she served as Secretary of the Environment of the Federal District government, during the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador. During this period, she was responsible for the construction of the second floor of the Peripheral Ring, in the San Antonio-San Jerónimo section. She was also in charge of the construction of the first Metrobús line.

In 2006 he resigned from his position to be part of the López Obrador campaign team. She was named his spokesperson during that year’s presidential contest. Once the Tabasco politician denounced that there was electoral fraud and installed his “legitimate government”, he appointed Claudia Sheinbaum as head of the Secretary of Defense of National Heritage. In 2008, Sheinbaum coordinated, along with other leaders, the Movement in Defense of Petroleum, which carried out intense mobilizations of peaceful resistance outside the Senate of the Republic, to protest against the alleged privatization of Pemex. She was in charge of the formation of women’s brigades that they called “adelitas”.

In 2012, once again, Claudia Sheinbaum  joined the Andrés Manuel López Obrador presidential campaign team. The then candidate included her in his cabinet proposal as Secretary of the Environment.

Some time later, in 2014  Claudia Sheinbaum participated in the creation of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), a party with which she ran as a candidate for the Tlalpan delegation in the 2015 elections. She was victorious and held office until December 2017. During this period, she was involved in the controversy that caused the collapse of the Enrique Rebsamén school as a result of the earthquake on September 19, 2017. She was questioned about the irregular permits granted by the demarcation under her responsibility for the construction and expansion of said school and which led to the fall of a part of the campus, causing the death of 26 people, including 19 children.

Claudia Sheinbaum  was also involved in another scandal, after it was revealed that as a full-time researcher at UNAM, she received an annual income of 900,000 pesos. She was criticized and accused of “doubling” because she earned two salaries, the one from the university and the one from a public official. In response, UNAM reported that the head of the Tlalpan delegation only received a percentage of five percent of this support.

In December 2017, Claudia Sheinbaum decided to resign as Delegate from Tlalpan to run as Morena’s candidate for Head of Government, in the 2018 elections. The UNAM researcher won the elections and became the first woman elected to that position. Rosario Robles was in that same position from 1999 to 2000, but it was only as an interim.
