Cazzu Biography

From a very young age, she had the taste and passion for music in her veins, so from a very young age she sang for her family and friends at events and parties that took place at her home. She is currently one of the most recognized rap, freestyle and trap singers and composers from her native Argentina. Argentina has become one of the figures of the so-called Latin “trap” , that subgenre within urban music characterized by explicit lyrics and led by men.

Meaning of the name Cazzu

Cazzu is the abbreviation of his last name Cazzuchelli. They gave her the nickname Cazzu in high school, everyone called her that and she loved the way it sounded, but when she wanted to enter the world of music they told her that it didn’t sound very commercial and they forced her to change her name so she wouldn’t he could think of something other than Cazzu and that is that he really liked him.

Cazzu is a singer that is well known today for her peculiar way of interpreting Trap music, although she also likes the reggaeton genre, but regardless of the genre, what she enjoys the most is being able to compose songs, and she explains how her process is to do so:“Sometimes it depends on the context. If we’re in the studio with the kids, we grab a beat and suddenly start creating. When I do it alone I have a process of thinking about what I want to talk about, then I write words that I like and I start to form a structure. I almost always go through the Internet looking for random instrumentals with notes that I like and when I already have an idea I record it myself in the home studio that I have at home. Then I end up spending a few days reviewing it over and over again until I’m sure and then I go to the studio and production with who I think is the right producer for the style”. In a musical genre dominated by men , Cazzú has already made a name for himself that has undoubtedly brought him great success in his career.

Early years in Cazzu’s musical life

Music has been present in her life since she was very young, at the age of 11 she stepped on her first stage thanks to her father, he is a musician who took her to all the presentations he had and that is how she got to know the world of music and really ended up enchanted with that world. Later her interest in everything related to music grew and she began to experiment at school and in some bands of different genres to which she could belong. At 14, all she wanted was to occupy her time with music, whether it was singing on the street or at parties with friends and family, she sang whenever she could.

In her home, only folklore was heard and she was the “ weird ”: a cumbia singer (her alias was Juli K) who skated, walked around dyed colors and studied film in Tucumán. “But dedication is worth more than talent,” she continues. Her parents viewed her experience in music with some suspicion. To the point that until she moved to Buenos Aires and recorded her first songs, Cazzu did not tell them what she was up to: “It was going against what they wanted. Anyway, no one was going to get hurt.”

Cazzu ‘s passion for music goes back to his roots. “My dad plays the guitar and sings. It’s the first image I have when it comes to music ,” she says, admitting that everything she knows today is because of him. “I never studied music or took singing classes. Music was very appreciated in my house and we consumed all kinds of music.”

Beginnings of Cazzu in Music

Strangely, Cazzu began in music performing cumbia songs, but, although he enjoyed it, he did not take off in that genre, so he decided to opt for another genre, rock, but sadly it did not work for him to venture into that music or with a band.  “When everything about cumbia didn’t work out and I got tired of having a hard time, I decided that I was going to start from scratch, far away. He couldn’t call me any other way, even my promotion jacket had a Cazzu on the back , ” Cazzu recalled  in a recent interview.

Later, he arrived in Tucumán to study film, after a while he moved to Buenos Aires with the purpose of studying multimedia design and everything related to audiovisuals because since he did not see a clear future in music he had to live for something and he found in the arts graphics the escape to not be so poor, although really his goal was to continue trying his luck in music. When he found a more or less stable job, he was able to start paying for his first recordings and video clips. “I was my first investor, money I made, money I invested in videos and songs,” he says. This is how his first songs were formed, already using his name “ Cazzu ”.

Trajectory in the music of Cazzu

He made his way participating in the most listened to song of the moment together with Duki and Khea (Loca, with more than 140 million reproductions in four months), in the clip of Killa he presented his entire first album Maldade$, a pure hesitant gangsta lover, He collaborated with La Joaqui on the bowling hit Ay papi, has the bench of rappers like Klan or Neo Pistéa and is anxiously awaiting the release of the remix of Loca that Bad Bunny sent . “I feel quite proud of myself,” she says.

During the Daddy Yankee and Ozuna show in Buenos Aires, Cazzu had the mission of heating up the track with Khea and Ecko . But far from the stereotype of the Latin trap, meanwhile her mother put her in orbit: she sent her WhatsApp reminding her how much she had dreamed of that moment. “When everything about cumbia didn’t work out and I got tired of having a hard time, I decided that I was going to start from scratch, far away. He couldn’t call me anything else, even my promotion jacket had a Cazzu on the back”, she recalls.

“For me, Cazzu is everything I wanted to be. She’s my alter ego, she’s a fucking superhero,” she enthuses. That power and energy, that girl power that is shown in songs like “ Chapiadora ”.
“I am not one to give them a stereotype, I do not want to impose a way of being a woman. I just want to carry my idea. I take off and remove that weight of being the role model, I don’t allow it to happen. I am a human being who makes music for those people who might like that music. What I am or what I say is not correct, I have it very clear, “ said Cazzu . When she started in the trap, her criticisms made her feel bad. “Today I turn them inside out like a stocking.”Once, in a gathering with other artists, a skinny man blurted out that she was “good to be a woman.” And Cazzu enthroned an unprecedented patience: “I don’t want to have asshole friends.”

Then, in addition to taking the stage at 2019 Lollapalooza Argentina, she debuted her studio album Error 93,  under Rimas Entertainment, showcasing her sweet voice and experimental sound.
“I sat down with my producer and we listened to a lot of albums,” she says of the album’s creative process. “One of the albums we listened to the most was Halland’s Badlands. I love being able to blend some of the sounds that she uses to create urban music. Jeremih is another artist whose flow and way of singing and writing music I try to incorporate,” he says, adding :” I’m just trying to create what is essentially in my brain.”

In “Error 93”, Cazzu has made an effort to write about stories of love and heartbreak and with a language and tone that allows him to communicate with the entire Hispanic sphere. “I always thought that there was something in our Argentine accent that did not allow us to be understood. In these things you have to think that I need the people of Puerto Rico, for example, to understand what I am saying so that they can feel represented,” he affirms. The album also reduces intensity to the usual sexually explicit lyrics of the trap and the new production is peppered, for example, with phrases like “I should be a lawyer / I don’t miss any play”, as heard on the song “Mucha data”.

Musically, reggaeton slows down at times and dresses up with dance hall, R&B and punk, all marked by the soprano in her voice. The disc only has two collaborations. “Nothing”, a reggaeton with Lyanno, Rauw Alejandro and Dalex ; and “La clase”, with the Argentine  rag-pickers Duki , Neo Pistéa and Ysy A. Offstage, the 25-year-old artist is more Julieta Cazzuchelli than Cazzu: she speaks with a soft tone and a leisurely rhythm that makes her believable when she confesses that During her childhood, in the northwestern Argentine province of Jujuy, she was a quiet girl.

“My mom thought I was going to be mute,” she recalled. Her dream was music and she realized that it was possible at the age of 15, when she wrote her first song. “It was a rap with hip hop and I realized that she had the ability to compose my own music,” she said. “My voice seems very recognizable to many people and how I see it, but for me composing is my priority. It allows me to say, how I want to say it, what I think,” she commented.

In April 2020, Cazzu released her EP called “Bonus Trap” and with which she assured that she is the head of Argentine urban music. “Bonus Trap” includes as the first single ” Bounce ” which is pure dirty, provocative and horny trap, in which Cazzu becomes self-referential in a joking and sarcastic tone. ” Esquina ” is the second song from the EP that includes the featuring with Puerto Ricans Eladio Carrión and Noriel. In this piece, Cazzu fully immerses himself in sound experimentation, with interesting instrumentation that gives the song a modern and very personal touch. The third theme is ” Me prefere a mi” with the Puerto Rican Mike Towers that is accompanied by an animated video clip that was created and produced in times of quarantine in Buenos Aires, under the direction of Cazzu , Agustín Sartori and Darío Vilanova from Dopamina FX.  “It is a material that has the imprint of my personality, real situations and a raw lyric that moves away from the comfort of listening to a woman sing beautifully in a beautiful rhythm and with beautiful words”, considered Cazzu.
