José Álvaro Osorio Balvín ,  better known as J Balvin, is a famous Colombian singer, songwriter and music producer, exponent of the Latin reggaeton genre, who in his long career has achieved great musical successes such as Un día, You Stay, Safari, Bonita, Si tu novio te leave alone, what else then?, among many others. J Balvin was born on May 7, 1985 in Medellín, Colombia and in 2021 he had his first child named Río with his then girlfriend, the model  Valentina Ferrer .

Beginnings in the life of J Balvin

José Álvaro Osorio Balvin, better known in the world of musical entertainment as J Balvin , was born on May 7, 1985 in the city of Medellín, Colombia. His parents are José Álvaro Osorio and Alba Mery Balvin, it is also to our knowledge regarding his family environment that he has a younger sister who goes by the name of Carolina and works as a distinguished model.

Since he was little , J Balvin  showed interest in the world of music, and at the age of 14 he became particularly interested in the hip hop genre. And after finishing his studies he took a trip to Oklahoma for a cultural exchange, later he lived for a time in New York City, where he ended up consolidating his taste for the urban musical genre. So during his high school studies he was part of different rock bands, and it was already in his university years, while he was studying international business and social communication at EAFIT University that he joined the rap band known by the name of MDL Crew.

Thus, he interrupted his studies when he was already in the seventh semester, and around 2007  J Balvin began his musical career as a soloist with the song ” Éxtasis “, of which he would later present a remix version with the singer Jowell. It was also this year that he released what was his first mixtape known under the name of Real.

The following year, in 2008, J Balvin  made the premiere of the song “Inalcanzable”, which he performed with the duo Golpe a Golpe, in addition to releasing other singles such as: “Give me your heart”, “Something magical”, “Bailame”, and “Pa la tumba (remix version)”. In the same way we must mention that he released his second mixtape under the title of The Business ; while towards the end of 2008 he managed to participate as an opening act for the rap singer named 50 Cent in the city of Medellín.

A short time later, in 2009, J Balvin  presented the single “Ella me captivó” , with which he achieved national recognition and became “revelation artist of 2009” on the radio station La Mega de RCN. , also appeared in the category of “summer artist” in Los 40 Principales, and for its part, the government of the department of Antioquia recognized him as a “revelation composer.”

It was also in this year when J Balvin  signed a contract with the Machete Music record company, and later with EMI Music. So on the date of May 7, 2009 he launched the special edition of his mixtape known by the name of Real . We must point out that this album was such a success that it earned the distinction of “gold record” due to the large number of copies sold.

The following year, in 2010, J Balvin ventured into the international market, appearing in New Jersey, Orlando, Miami, Boston, and New York, while his music was increasingly listened to in Latin American countries, while he was appearing on a tour of Europe, cultivating great success with his single “Without commitment” .

Shortly after, in 2011, he presented the songs of: “Partan la disco” (in collaboration with Guelo Star), “Mi dama de Colombia” remix version (in collaboration with Jowell & Randy, Pipe Calderón, Pipe Bueno ), “Me You like it”, and “En lo oscuro”, the latter song being the one that got the first position on the National Report list of Colombia and would mark the true great success for  J Balvin.

Subsequently, in 2012 he launched the En lo oscuro Mix Tape, and was recognized at the Nuestra Tierra Awards and the Shock Awards with the categories of “artist of the year” and a year later  J Balvin  premiered the song “Yo te lo dije” which would be the first song of his first studio album, and the same song that increased his international fame. While the following year, in 2013 he released the single “Sola” to the public; and he appeared at the Premios Juventud with the interpretation of the song “Yo te lo dije”.

“6 AM” was a collaboration with Farruko, this song became the first song by J Balvin to appear on the charts in Spain, in the same way that he was nominated for the Latin Grammy Award in the category of “best urban performance” and “best urban song”; being the winner of two Lo Nuestro Awards with the categories of “best song” and “urban collaboration”.

A short time later, on the date of October 23, 2013, J Balvin  released his first studio album, which he named La familia, which managed to position itself in tenth place on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums, at the same time which won 5 distinctions as a platinum record in Colombia.

Later, in 2014, the album La familia by J Balvin was nominated at the Latin Grammy Awards in the category of “best urban music album”. Soon after, J Balvin released the song “Ay vamos”, which became number one on the Hot Latin Songs list. It was the same way this year when J Balvin participated in the Greek MAD VMAs next to the singer known as Eleni Foureira, with the interpretation of the song “Tranquila”.

The following year, in 2015 he was on the tour of the singers Pitbull and Enrique Iglesias and at the same time the song “Ay vamos” would bear its first great fruits because because of it J Balvin won the Latin Grammy Award in the category of “best music urban” . Another important track that he released to the public during this year was “Ginza”, which made his international fame resonate.

While in 2016 J Balvin  released the studio album known as Energía, whose success led him to undertake the tour called Energía Tour, during 2017 he released the songs of: “ Bonita” (in collaboration with Jowell & Randy), “If your boyfriend leaves you alone” (performed with Bad Bunny ), and “My people” (with artist Willy William).

After a short time, in 2018 J Balvin  presented what was his third studio album, known as Vibras ; and later he premiered the song called “Positivo”, in whose interpretation he collaborated with the artist Michael Brun, it should be noted that this song was nominated to be the official song of the 2018 Soccer World Cup.

During the following year, in 2019, he performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, where he opened up to the press about his excitement at being the first Latino artist at the event: “It took us fifteen years for the reggaeton to Coachella. I’m J Balvin and I’m from Medellin, Colombia. It is a great opportunity to be representing Latinos with reggaeton today.”

While for the month of March of this same year he collaborated with the Spanish singer Rosalía in the interpretation of the song “With height” a song that would be a tremendous success for her and to date her greatest, but for J Balvin  the successes would not stop and on June 28, 2019 he released the collaborative album Oasis with the singer Bad Bunny , this album being nominated in the category of “best Latin rock, urban or alternative album” in the 62nd edition of the Grammy Awards. We cannot forget that it was also in 2019 when she presented the songs of: “China”, “What a pity” and “Rhythm”.

In 2020  J Balvin released his fourth studio album titled Colores and at the same time he released the EPs “Summer Love, Summe Vacation, and Summer fiesta”, while the collaborations would not stop as he released the song “Qué more then?” together with the singer María Becerra ; “Location” for Karol G ‘s album  with Anuel AA ; “Water” for the SpongeBob movie with Tainy , “Tata” with Eladio Carrión and “La Bomba” with Canadian Justin Bieber , among many more.
