Who is G-Dragon?

Kwon Ji Yong better known as  G-Dragon is a famous South Korean rapper, singer and songwriter who, thanks to his great talent, has excelled in music with hits like “Bullshit, Flower Road, Divina Commedia, Middle flingers up, Super Star, Crooked” , among others. Singer G-Dragon was born on August 18, 1988 in Seoul, South Korea and is also known for being a member of the kpop group BIGBANG since 2006.

Beginnings in the life of G-Dragon

Kwon Ji-young, better known in the world of musical entertainment as G-Dragon , was born on the date of August 18, 1988 in the city of Seoul, South Korea. It is considered that the beginnings of his artistic career occurred at a very early age, when as a child he first appeared on television with the MBC program Bbo Bbo Bbo.

Later, when he was 6 years old, the now famous  G-Dragon  joined the children’s musical group called Little Roo’Ra, while at 8 years old he became an apprentice of the company SM Entertainment , after the agency set eyes on him by discovering his great talent on a ski trip that Kwon Ji-young.

At age 9, he was introduced to the rap group Wu-Tang Clan through contact from a friend. Then Kwon Ji-young fell in love with this musical genre, and he started taking rap classes. It was in this way that under the tutelage of the hip hop group called People Crew, Kwon Ji-young participated in the release of the album known as Hip Hop Flex, back in 2001, becoming the youngest Korean rapper. of only 13 years of age and in that same year  he made the decision to leave SM Entertainment since he was not sure what path he wanted to follow in life.

Then, Kwon Ji-young knew that rap and the world of music was the path she wanted to follow in life. Shortly after, the singer Sean of a hip hop duo from YG Entertainment, known as Jinusean, became interested in him, so he recommended him to CEO Yang Hyun-suk. Kwon Ji-young signed a contract as an apprentice, and met Dong Young-bae, and it was around that time that he adopted the stage name of G Dragon , which, in various interviews, he has explained comes from his real name Ji- young, where Ji is pronounced in the Korean language like the English letter G, while Young means dragon in the Korean language.

This is how it is considered that G-Dragon  made his formal debut in the world of musical entertainment back in 2006, with the album called Bigband Vol.1 by the group Big Bang , which included a single by G Dragon  a cover of the original song “This Love” by Maroon 5.

G-Dragon’s career and artistic history

The following year, in 2007 G-Dragon  collaborated with the musical group Big Bang in the release of the album called Always in the composition of songs such as: “Lies” (which turned out to be a winner at the Mnet Asian Music Awards with the category of “song of the year”), “Last Farewell” and “Haru Haru”. We cannot ignore that G Dragon also helped in the production of Taeyang’s EP called Hot.

Later, in 2009, G-Dragon  was collaborating with the Japanese musical group Winds. Being that it was in that same year when he made his debut as a solo singer by presenting the album called Hearthbreaker, of which the most successful song was the single of the same name; this album won the Mnet Asian Music Awards with the category of “album of the year”.

The following year, in 2010, G Dragon made a duet with TOP releasing GD & TOP and the following year G Dragon participated in the TV show known as Infinite Challenge in the company of Park Myeong-su and Bom.

But not all of it would be good news in the singer’s life because G-Dragon was involved in a controversy that endangered his fame, when he was accused of smoking marijuana . Shortly after, the singer spoke about it, confessing that he was at a party held in Japan where he was offered a cigarette and he smoked without knowing that it was marijuana, since he had never smelled it.

Leaving aside that scandal, in 2012, G-Dragon  released the musical album known under the title of One of a Kind, an album that was located on the Billboard 200 list. The most outstanding songs of this EP were: “One of a kind” (which won Best Hip Hop & Rap Song of the Year at the Korean Music Awards as well as the Rhythmer Awards), “Crayon” (the song that G Dragon won at the Mnet Asian Music Awards with the category of “best male artist”), and “That XX”. We cannot ignore that it was in that year that G Dragon undertook the tour called One of a Kind World Tour, in which he visited a total of 8 countries and 13 places.

Later, in 2013, G-Dragon  released the album Coup dÉtat, which included collaborations with artists such as: Baauer, Diplo, Boys Noize, Sky Ferreira, Jennie and Missy Elliott, quite an achievement for a kpop singer. Among the most outstanding songs on this album we must point out those titled as: “Who You?” and “Coup dÉtat”. The success of the album was such that G Dragon won a total of four awards at the Mnet Asian Awards in 2014.with the categories of: “best male artist”, “best music video”, “best dance performance” and “artist of the year”. While in 2015, we know that she collaborated writing songs for other singers, and helped Taeyang with the production of his album Rise. We cannot ignore the fact that together with the same artist Taeyang he launched the song titled “Good Boy”. While for the month of December he presented the song “Dirty Vibe”, which is a collaboration with singers CL, Diplo and Shrillex.

In 2017, G-Dragon  collaborated with IU to compose the single “Palette.” We cannot ignore that G Dragon was also working on a new music album of his own and planning an international tour. His new album finally came out under the name of Kwon Ji-young, his real name; what motivated the choice of this title was to show the most human part of him to the public, moving away from the character of G Dragon built as a figure to cause a sensation in the music show business.

A little later, in 2018, it is our knowledge that he launched a documentary dedicated to showing behind the scenes of his artistic tour. While in the year 2019 and until the present 2021 the singer  G Dragon stayed away from the world of entertainment because he enlisted in the army to fulfill his military service . 

But the successes did not stop for the singer because at the beginning of 2022 G-Dragon launched a collaboration with Nike to launch his own Nike Kwondo1 sneakers , this would be the second time it happened. “I want freedom in everything I do, from dressing to creating my own style. For those who have felt like things were too little or too many, I want this shoe to ignite an exploration of expression and pave the way for personal freedom.” G – Dragon said of his own sneakers with Nike.

• G Dragon has the words ‘Vita Dolce’ and ‘Moderato’ tattooed on his right and left forearms respectively.
• On his right shoulder blade G Dragon has tattooed the words ‘Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die’
• The singer further has an image of a flying angel with its wings spread and a loin cloth wrapped around its body is tattooed on the back of G Dragon’s neck.

• G Dragon has two small ‘X’s just above his belly button. The tattoo and belly button on him make an ‘ XoX ‘ emoticon face. It is believed to be a reference to his song, ‘That XX’. 
• Beneath the ‘Moderato’ on his left arm, G Dragon also has a crown tattoo.
• On the upper part of his left shoulder (above the Dragon Ball), G Dragon has the Roman numeral  ‘VIIIVIII VIII IVIII’ tattooed . Fans assume this is a reference to his birth date.
• Inspired by the 1996 version of the movie Romeo and Juliet, G Dragon got a pistol design tattooed on the inside of his left arm.
• The words “Mind Control” are visible on G Dragon’s left rib cage.
• ‘♡’ (heart smiley), ‘F’ and ‘$’ (dollar sign) are individually tattooed on three fingers of G Dragon’s left hand.
• G Dragon has a large cross tattooed on his left calacle.
• In addition to his collection of rather dainty tattoos, G Dragon has a small smiley face right next to his thumb on his left hand.
• G Dragon also has a clever three-part tattoo that spells out the words ‘TO_’, ‘GET’, and ‘HER’ on his right triceps, lower back, and left triceps respectively. He can read the words individually or combine them to read ‘together’.
