When  Jerónimo Cantillo was only one year old, his family was the victim of the tragic murder of his father for political reasons, injuring his mother. What we know about this terrible event is that Congressman Milciades Cantillo Costa was aboard a taxi on April 5, 1995, when three individuals attacked him at the location of Carrera 12 Calle 7 in the neighborhood known as San Carlos, which is north of Valledupar. His father managed to reach the clinic, however he did not survive, while his mother had better luck and managed to stay alive even though she was hit by those bullets. Regarding this event, Jerónimo tells us how it marked his life, and made him find a refuge in art for so much pain:

“When we left here (Valledupar) we went to many cities in Colombia because at that time the situation was very difficult. Cali, Barranquilla, Santa Marta when I was four years old and I had the opportunity to learn about music in the capital of Magdalena, together with my brother Milciades Cantillo, who is a great vallenato singer”.

Jerónimo Cantillo grew up in a musical environment, and it was around the age of 12 when he discovered his artistic vocation, which would later lean towards acting and music.
